Yes, I do, all the time. I'm beginning to wonder why I even use them, since using "top","bottom",etc. would be equally correct and less likely to get mixed up. I guess I want to give the feel of a large battlefield, but I'm not sure that works or is necessary.

Maybe use other terms. Hmm "Meanwhile on the other end of the map" or perhaps make up a quick description of the terrain you are talking about, though that's not of much use on maps as symmetric as Intersection.
