The matchmaker feels dull and empty, lacking some degree of fun. when you are in small teams/clusterfuck custom/autohost rooms, you have tons of people chatting with eachother inbetween games, and can at least see all the names of people in the room. you have pritty pictures tolook at, the map and checkmark/X, vote bar progression, spectatorlist, it's full and alive. Comapre that to the matchmaker tab, which has on opening *3 buttons *some numbers *2/3rds empty space. the empty space becomes a post game chat(sometimes) your game ends. this chatroom will have the players and any spectators, so like 3 people average. no color, no community, and I don't think #zk is a good substitute. I think it could use a little more livening up.

1: it would be great if there were a mini battle list showing only matchmaker games in progress, to promote spectating while queuing. Also, it would have map pictures and when you hover over them you get colorful player names.

2: I want a #matchmaker chat that replaces the empty space where post game discussion is. all the people in matchmaking could chat it up in between games like a large teams room, not just the people in your last game.

you can stay in queque while joining a room, even spectating

you can do anything and everything while in queque, is there a need for any other feature?

I'd say you are disincentivissed to join a custom room, because then you'll get the idea to leave the queue, and just play the customs. If we want a more anonymous, easy to use matchmaker for a casual player, it needs to be populated, so we need to create incentives to stay in queue.

I've started a FFA while still in queue, that was a mistake because then I had to abandon the FFA or just NOT do what I queued to do.

Team matchmaker would be better if it had more people in it. You wouldn't notice the lack of creature comforts if it was one game after another as it was shortly after Steam release. I certainly don't recall any complaints about the fact that MM was just "push button, play game." It was probably a selling point. "Push button" is an easier process than go to custom tab, find the right game and wait.

As it stands, I spend much of my time watching lobster pots, then jumping in when I'd rather be playing small teams because there are no small team games to be had. Sure I could set up a custom room, but who will peel themselves away from the latest crustaceon meme?

Maybe we should just ditch the matchmaker system full stop for team games and have it as a 1v1 queue only (since 1v1 scene is still reasonably lively, though the amount of times I've run into @[ffc] there has got a bit silly!) Set up 2v2 and 3v3 autohosts and just run from there. I don't think there is a need for a 4v4 autohost since that size of game was rare anyway and when MM decided to run a 4v4 on Living Lands, it was just taking the piss (essentially a lobster pot writ small).

Small team rooms with all the custom panoply will supply the community benefits USrankAdminSteel_Blue proposes with little effort and being able to see who else is in the room means we can assess for ourselves how fair the game will be, eliminating immediately the premade problem I've complained about in the past. When there are newbies in the rooms, more experienced players could also speak to them in advance. A friendly introduction beforehand will probably make a better initial experience than joining a blind queue, getting raged at for not knowing how to play and then being stomped by the other side with barely a gg for your trouble.

Since there are so few people doing team MM these days, I don't think an extra channel would really serve any purpose.

Buttons could be added for "join 2v2" and "join 3v3" from the menu to make them easy to find if desired.

Regarding Matchmaker activity and Teams room. I've been working on a system that tries to complement the two.

Every time a big teams match finishes, every player is offered to join the Small Teams Matchmaker. This Matchmaker is slightly modified in that it will either give you an instant game or none at all. The elo width expansion time and waiting is skipped. It simply looks if there are enough players from the finished teams game with similar rating and give them a match if possible. If you decline this offer, you won't be annoyed again for at least a day.

The idea here is to give those playing in Big Teams that'd play a smaller game, if it existed, a chance to try to create such a game, without having to go through the hassle of asking players to join a different room or manually join the matchmaker between each match.

This is an addition to the existing Matchmaker, so players who are outside of the Teams room but in the Teams Matchmaker will be equally considered for these matches.
