I found out on today's apod that 2015 is the International Year of Light (IYL)!

To celebrate I suggest we add more light effects, more lasers, disable shadows, spam more solars and turn up the shinyness!

How to enable projectile following glow on the ground? And this epic nuke /singular mapwide glow shiny?

If I remember correct then terrain-glow for rockets and other projectiles was too resource hungry in the current form. Not sure if anything changed or if there's a way to enable it locally.

Whats "mapwide glow shiny"? It sounds fun bright! \o/

Isn't there something in BAR that implements dynamic lighting/shadows or something similar? Could that work with ZK?

Thaaat's what I meant. I think another argument not to use it was "let's wait till BAR is released" or so, but that was about a year ago. Maybe things have changed?

there was a concept trailer on youtube.

Ooooo shiny! I don't care so much about the terrain glow for the missile in-flight, but the terrain glow from the explosion is pretty! And if really decreases performance then this might be an issue for Recluses' and similar spammed projectiles, but probably not nukes, right?

The shader is licensed CC-BY-ND. I think ND means "no inclusion into other greater works", so maybe if you ask Beherith to license more permissively it or if you want to reverse-engineer it or do it from scratch now that you know it's doable.

You can use it privately though.

It's a widget, and a widget can't be licensed with CC.

https://wiki.creativecommons.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions#Can_I_apply_a_Creative_Commons_license_to_software.3F
quote:
Unlike software-specific licenses, CC licenses do not contain specific terms about the distribution of source code, which is often important to ensuring the free reuse and modifiability of software. Many software licenses also address patent rights, which are important to software but may not be applicable to other copyrightable works. Additionally, our licenses are currently not compatible with the major software licenses, so it would be difficult to integrate CC-licensed work with other free software.

I know EErankAdminAnarchid already knows this, but for the sake of everyone else, it's more about politeness and respect how much spring has already benefited from Beherith's impressive and prolific work than an actual licensing issue.

It's not as clear as that. Shader is in a separate glsl file and engine official stance on shaders is unclear.

XTA is so ancient now but it always did have nice shiny projectiles.

- This is a random example I found, but the T2 artillery is where it gets really shiny, this is just a small unit battle

ZK would benefit from stealing some of their projectile content

Edit: found this funny video from Randy in related videos, kinda sad that half these 'fun plays' aren't doable in ZK, also sad that all those memorable names in spec list no longer play, also reminds me of how everyone used to belong to clans but clans stopped being a thing for some reason

Ah I see. I had only looked at the widget itself:

http://imolarpg.dyndns.org/trac/balatest/browser/branches/BAR/luaui/widgets/gfx_deferred_rendering.lua

I think the way it works is that the widget needs to be GPL-compatible, but I can't prove that there's anything wrong with it linking to a CC-BY-ND shader file. It's odd that he put the CC-BY-ND license in the widget, but perhaps that was just to make people aware of the shader license. So if I'm correct, re-implementing the work should just mean a custom glsl shader file.

GBrank[Fx]Drone
XTA uses the groundflash trick, which is really easy to implement. But all it does is draw a colored circle on the ground, whereas the deferred rendering imitates light on both ground and units and looks 100x better.

The glow in those videos is very expensive (different from the deferred rendering widget), and limited to very small numbers. The nuke had shiny for a short time, but everyone complained about the lag whenever a nuke went off.

Well, also there is this:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/3.0/legalcode
quote:
3. License Grant. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, Licensor hereby grants You a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual (for the duration of the applicable copyright) license to exercise the rights in the Work as stated below:

a. to Reproduce the Work, to incorporate the Work into one or more Collections, and to Reproduce the Work as incorporated in the Collections; and,

b. to Distribute and Publicly Perform the Work including as incorporated in Collections.

Just saying it's not anyhow clear. It's murky.

"They stole chickens" was unambiguosly legal though.

Well,

"to incorporate the Work into one or more Collections"
sounds like it grants the right to include the shader code in ZK and

"Distribute and Publicly Perform the Work including as incorporated in Collections"
sounds like the ZK code can still be distributed with shader code included, and the shader have a visible effect on the game.

So even if the licensing is odd (you shouldn't use CC either for code or for anything you don't want to share!!), I think I could easily make the strongest case that:

1. The widget needs to be GPL-compatible, and therefore may be modified at will

2. The linked shader can be CC-BY-ND 3.0, and then therefore it is allowed to be included, distributed, and used, with the only limitation that it cannot be modified first

Inclusion onto a greater work that is not a Collection, however, is considered an adaptation for the purposes of CC-BY-ND 3.0
