Anyone think this is a good combo, because I really like spiders.

Hermit in front of Redback, which is defending the Recluse, which is escorting the Crabe.
Fleas are giving intel and Wyvern is nuking enemy factories.

Positions:

ENEMY FLEA HERMITREDBACK RECLUSE CRABE WYVERN

Wyvern is not a spider, though.

Also factories are on the list of worst targets for (tactical) nuking: they are sturdy, cheap, and only slow enemy by 10 buildpower.

In practice, its a very weak combo I'm afraid - Redback + Hermit are both low tier units.

What? Hermits are amazing. I'd suggest putting some Venoms in somewhere.

Unless my opponent had something in particular which Redback was strong against, I would probably dispense with them entirely in favour of Venoms.

Besides that, yes, spiderball is a vialble strategy. If your spiders are grouped up tightly, you need to be careful of area-of-effect attacks like Firewalker, Sumo, Phoenix, Thunderbird and Wyvern. Most striders will outpunch you as well.

So, Venom>Redback?
Is Crabe a good unit to have spammed?

Crabe is a lategame unit. Once your armies grow beyond 10-20 hermits, a crabe might prove a more effective addition than more hermits.

CSI uses 2 hermits + 1 venom as spam combo, with crabes as support. Recluses and Redbacks can be strong, but are more specialized units that only work well when employed properly.

Wyvern is always a great addition, just make sure to use an infiltrator on that screamer before bombing it.

Fleas are the perfect passive scouts, but if you want to actively monitor the enemy's base in late game and don't have any remaining fleas nearby, send an infiltrator instead. It has the smallest decloak radius of any unit which makes it nearly impossible for your opponent to find.

Crabes are too expensive to spam, and most people only keep one or two at a time. If you can afford to spam them then you should probably build something more expensive instead, like dante/scorpion/catapult.

Just testing Vs AI, but venom is killing lots despite only having 10 normal damage.
EMP?.
Should I pair this with hovercraft plant/Gunship to provide cover?

Is Tarantula worth it in a "Squad" of spiders?
How do you raid with these guys, their pretty slow and flea dies to the lasers :(

Your Tarantula production should mostly depend on how much your opponent has invested in aircraft and the size of the area you need to protect with mobile AA. You should be able to get away with a force of Tarantulas which is half as expensive as their current air force.

Spiders work best on small maps where they can raid with Venon and Hermit. Venoms are almost as fast as raiders so a few of them early on will prevent your opponent from raiding. Flea raiding is important for slowing down your opponent as it forces investment in turrets or forces to kill the Fleas. They have a few responses to Fleas:
  • Raiders.
  • Riots.
  • LLT.
  • Defender.
If they defend their expansion with raiders then attack them with your reasonably fast Venoms. If they defend with riots then you are automatically ahead because they just invested a lot in a slow unit. LLT is similar to riots and has low coverage. Defenders are cheaper and have high coverage. If they try to defend too lightly with Defenders then consider killing lone Defenders with a group of five Fleas. These four responses to Fleas are do poorly against the Venoms with Hermits or Recluses which you should be building up (and advancing) behind your Fleas. The initial Venoms which you used for defense can be added to your Hermits or Recluses.

On a relatively small map with a strategically important hill it can be worthwhile to get an early crabe. Just make sure you use it to put pressure and not to suicide it.

I'll need to keep the enemy units distracted as my Recluse hammers their defense to bits?

What about large maps?
Should I hit Mex, or high cost energy?
Both?
Should I stay with Spider factory all through the match?

On large maps, or even medium sized maps, you shouldn't stay with one factory for the whole match. You will probably want air and might want striders or particular units from other factories.

Mind that spiders don't fare well on flat maps. They prefer hilly terrain but without cliffs.

Why do you say they prefer no cliffs? Cliffs are great because they block the movement of every other land factory. They can allow Recluse to shoot safely and give Hermit and Crabe range bonuses.

Cliffs make jumpjets much stronger though.
Jumpjet units often have problem with getting into range when playing against spiders on rough terrain. This issue is mitigated when there are a lot of cliffs.

Are spiders powerful in direct warfare? A single non moving crabe decimated AI artilerry batteries in seconds O_O.

Venom+Recluse destroys tanks...
Is the spider plant a good factory to use as a newbie?

As a newbie against newbies: Sure, it's got a lot of tricks to catch people by surprise
As a newbie against more experienced players: Not unless you are just playing to iron out bad habits.
As an experienced player against others with similar experience: Depends on your comfort level with the factory and how hilly or cliffy the map is. Spiders on flat terrain have an uphill battle to fight.

Crabe's a pretty strong unit no matter what your skill level. (Unless you move it, anyway.)

However, it's much better in defense than in offense, precisely because you don't want to move it. You can terraform a high spire and shoot at enemies from outside their range, but you mostly don't want to charge with a Crabe.
