Can't really explain to people in one sentence that they are supposed to play against Null AI (or what ever it is called now, lol renames) and not kill it in a multiplayer "Battle Room"

Beginner is basically Sandbox and there is an AI called "Inactive AI" which is the much more descriptive name for NullAI. Sandbox is not an option through the simple skirmish setup because it is possibly too boring.

Perhaps it should be a different option entirely, under single player?

Sandbox should start a singleplayer room, add an Inactive AI, and let you tweak settings as you like.

Ideally it would also start with cheats on and come configured with larger than usual metal and energy reserves, for when you want to build a certain thing.

Perhaps also a button that spawns a new commander, so you can play with them all.

Is there really a market for sandbox?

I mean, FIFA doesn't have a sandbox mode where you are the only footballer on the pitch, does it?
