Why don't we have 3- or 4-player maps in 1v1 matchmaking?

By a 3- or 4-player map is meant a map that features 3 or 4 spawn spots symmetric about the center or a line, like in those FFA maps, but designed with 1v1 games in mind. A good number of such maps are played in Starcraft 1v1 matchmaking. I don't quite understand why it's not part of this game also. Is it a legacy culture from TA or something?

Hey, maybe have a look at this thread:

it is about the matchmaker maps.
Maybe you can propose a few ones that you would like to see in the pool.

There are such maps, they just don't compose the mm pool at this time and were not all that liked when they did iirc (Rogues River and Thornford spring to mind, don't think i recall any more of those tho).

Currently I don't have specific maps in mind, since most 3- or 4-player maps are really designed for FFA. The most close one in layout is perhaps La Isla Bonita, but it's a little bit too large.

I do wonder if the community enjoys such maps.

I think the lack of such maps is because few have seen the need for them, rather than a conscious choice to not include them. I'd say having 1v1 maps that aren't also 4-way maps is the default, and Starcraft is the weird one. A few existing 1v1 maps are 4-way as well though.

Actually, both players starting on the same side of the map and being able to expand completely to the other side of the map represents quite a bit of shift in gameplay to regular 1v1 maps. In general when you are expanding, you are always expanding closer and closer to the enemy. If both players start in the corners on the same side of the map, you are actually expanding away from your opponents starting position.

It could be interesting to see 3 or 4 player maps in big teams matchmaking too.

When rouge's River was in the pool I had an epic game against deinfreund in which godde's observation did pan out. There was a back and forth until I got a silo. The far end of the map was very sparsely raided.
