Thought on new planetwars

I like the way planetwars plays now but there are some issues with it. The first is that anyone can attack a planet without checking with their faction's strategists. This wastes a turn and could easily be used maliciously to sabotage a faction. I think that knights/generals should set what planet is to be attacked and maybe who is on the team. There is a problem that having noobs fighting for your faction is nearly always a disadvantage and for optimal play they should be kept out.

Some people have complained about stalling once a game is lost to tie up the opposing faction's good players. I personally like this as it links the metagame with individual battle more.

What do others think?

Not many 1v1 players. I noticed people screaming for someone to defend in a 1v1 but no one would volunteer, including myself.

Also I noticed Synpact has many dropships heading to ur planets while we have like 1 dropship on 1 planet.

So many Synpact should get more chances to attack us.

There are changes to battle rewards planned to make poor attacks less of a disadvantage. Metal gain will not depend on the battle outcome and losing an attack but destroying the CC will give a little bit of IP. The downside of some new players attacking will be limited to loss of initiative and possibly a loss of dropships if they are idle on a planet. This should not matter much in practice because I have observed that battles start fast enough to absorb all the players who wish to play at that time.

I do not want a small handful of players to have control over where and when everyone attacks. Individual players should be able to take part and have some feeling of control over what they do. It is boring to play the same map repeatably because the leaders decreed that everyone should attack a certain planet. It is much more interesting and investing to select a planet from the galaxy map, attack it and capture it. It is up to the mechanics to make misguided contributions not hurt the faction too much.

The default planets picked for attack targeting are likely to be the ones which are attacked the most. I do not know how these planets are selected but dropship presence increases their priority so this is one possible way to direct battles. Perhaps knights could be given a way to directly set the 3 default planets but I doubt that will in the initial implementation because it would require extra UI work.

Perhaps part of PW is in effectively communicating strategies to the rest of your faction. Remember that the level limit is 10 so the players will have some experience. This also makes it difficult to make malicious smurfs to mess with a faction. This PW is also opt-in and is based on small teamgames so I expect less people and a greater ability to coordinate. It is not designed to replace the large teamgame so people who are completely clueless about PW should be less of an issue.

The 1v1 games are being removed for the issues stated.

Maybe some planets could have team sizes. With higher team sizes no one has to spec because to teamsize is too small, and less skilled players can join too, since they will have a smaller influence on the outcome of the battle.
The problem is off course that this could lead to 5v1. Maybe difference in team size higher then 2 could be forbidden in some way...

BErankFlipstip, people already don't have to spec. There can be multiple pw games running at once. The only time this does not happen is when one faction lacks active players, so this already kind of implements your "Maybe difference in team size higher then 2 could be forbidden"-suggestion.

I actually kinda like 1v1 planets because they act as a sort of chokepoint for defenders. In general I'd like to see the individual planets have more diversity so they are not just blank ground with a random map associated. 1v1 planets allow for some planets to be considered differently than others. I'd like to see this more in the future so that the decision of which route you take to enemy planet x is decided by more than just pw structures.

I'd rather like to see metagame diversity of planets, not ingame stuff. Just random generic things like a planet with native life, special resources, or other natural bonuses and negative side effects. Maybe this could even be linked to maps to create a bit of a story/background for immersion. Though.. feature creep. :3

Random chicken infestations? To involve chicken players? :)

*neonstorm engaged* Make a weapon that fires chicken infestations causing them to attack the planet.

Headcrab shells!

I really like the idea of natural fauna and resources.

Chicken Maps, as a means of giving newbies something to do, might be a reasonable outlet. Rogue maps with CAI or the like might also work.

I am not personally a fan of adding them to the game, but they are the best idea I have heard for having a use for newbies, besides segregating them to fight against each-other (which has its own problems).

Chicken/CAI games mean the other faction does not get to participate and cannot do anything about it (and being reactive is bad).
Newbies currently don't get to participate at all (1500 team elo minimum).

Again, I do not talk about ingame stuff. I mean effects on the planetwars part, not to the ZK battles, unless they are either purely cosmetic or manage to make a battle more interesting without affecting balance and completely changing the way the game is played.

Also no chickens, please!

Could diplomats be given the right to manage texts? Dynasty has been keeping it's plan in the channel header and having several people keeping that updated would be useful. Speaking of diplomats, now that PW is 2 faction why do treaties still exist?

Even with two factions, diplomacy can be used to subvert enemy energy economy and create a single point of failure in their infrastructure :)
