Absolutely stupid map. Not only is pathing retarded (go to middle of map, walks up to north), but the constant hills make this map so spider-favoured the only reason I could win was large amounts of Knights which would have been ended by a single Crabe.
Luckily, brianfreeman couldn't actually use his spiderfac to its full effect or I think the battle would have been very lopsided. The Brawler transition actually caught me off-guard, although I generally transition to plane myself, and in hindsight, I think Ravens would have been better than Swifts killing those off.
Considering how there are only a few paths, even (Iris + Reaver and/or Knight) would not work since all you need are fleas covering the 3 paths to your base.

People won tournament games with tanks and hovercraft here, but spiders are generally strong in the meta right now.

The center offering both the most valuable metal spots and the best strategic position is something that new maps try to avoid. This does make the games here less interesting since it leaves few options. The variety all has to come from the way you try to take the center.

This may have been in an older balance patch before Tank redesigns, but Tank has a few units that give Spider a hard time: Welder (whose built-in laser mitigates Fleas) and Emissary (best conventional artillery, meanwhile spiders have neither a reliable raider nor their own artillery to counter).

Tank heavyweight raiders like Blitz can out-damage even Spider riots, while Ogre and Minotaur have no counterpart from the spiders. Presumably, Emissary wiped out Recluse spam and Goliath can go toe-to-toe with Crabe, using its anti-terraform and slow damage.

The one thing that can stop HT is Widow, which can stun Golitah/Minotaur but unless there is enough Widows, presumably not Ogres, which can? close Recluse range and at any rate, Recluse is doomed while facing Kodachi/Blitz.

The major reason HT has problem here is slow speed and minimal paths which make spider redployments much harder to deal with.
However, it seems like HT will be extremely difficult to dislodge once set up, especially with porc. Thus, as Deinfreund noted, a key goal for HT is to set up on middle, take the mexes, then get the flank sides, which yields more metal, along with a major advantage in terms of geography (mobility on the middle is not terrible)
