26th Hematite year 551

The bridge and ditch is complete. Further incompetence resulted in a channel breaching the food stockpile (I don't know how that happened, I was making marble tables at the time). The mechanics are busy slacking while they should be hard at work bringing the bridge alive.

Metalsmelting is thriving and we will soon have more silver than I know what to do with. A certain item of furniture for passing through walls comes to mind.

I crafted 10 iron picks for the newcomers and ordered some basic exploratory mining of the upper layers. The forges are hungry and it would be great to make a lot of steel.

A forgotten beast wandered into the caverns. TheSponge saw this coming and erected a flimsy wooden great that should be more than capable of holding it off.

15th Malachite year 551

13 more migrants arrived today bringing us up to 68 dwarves. They bought along four babies and one child. On the upside one of them is a fair weaponsmith, at least better than anything we have around here.

The miners have found a lot of hematite and galena.

I see a lot of broken goblin bones in the future with all this silver around.

It would probably be worth digging down to the magma sea for magma forges before starting on any serious metalwork project.

Make true your reputation for great projects, and prepare a magma hammer! Walking down to the core of the earth is too much trouble, bring the magma to us!

The bedrooms are complete apart from their doors. More will be dug soon to accommodate the influx of migrants.

The furniture for the dining room is nearing completion and significantly faster than expected. Sculpting tables and chairs becomes a lot easier with practise. The food is being moved into the nearby stockpile and it will soon be time to replace the old dining room. The doors of the dining room are not marble, they are the work of our forges and abundance of silver. Over the coming months I aim to smooth and engrave the entire room. Another, less skilled, mason will have to construct the doors for the bedrooms.

Directly below the dining room is the panic/lever room. It is accessible through a U-bend to offer more protection from various forms of Fun. The bridge at the entrance has been linked to a lever and labelled.

The structure to the left of the dining room is my next major project; a large spiral of minecarts to facilitate high speed transport of ore between the surface layers and the magma ocean. Some people are worrying about our finite supply of wood and coal for our forges and think we should use magma for large scale melting. I say that we have plenty of wood and coal but that using magma by far the most dwarfy choice.

Transporting ore 100+ levels with hoards of migrants sounds like a reasonable solution to the transport problem. Dwarven engineering is rarely about reasonable. So I have planned a minecart system (which will have other applications) to reach all the way down to the magma sea. The fact that I we only know of the layout of one cavern will not hinder progress!

11th Limestone

For the past few months I noticed a few dwarves suddenly become so stricken with grief that they stop whatever they are doing (and produce job cancellation announcement). Recently I investigated this and discovered that they are grieving for a dead dwarf! I have no idea how this happened, there were no smelly clouds, no body parts. He may have been dead for months. He could have died under TheSponge for all I know. The first death of the fortress is a mystery.

Upon learning this I constructed a few coffins and ordered the construction of a fitting tomb area. I chose a long blade of rock protruding out of the first cavern layer. I will look into constructing some windows for the sheer side of the blade for a spectacular view.

The second cavern has been found and plans are in place for its bypass. The project has been blessed with a very convenient solid chunk of stone which can be dug through to bypass this cavern. The second cavern is 35 levels below the dining room and the dining room is 20 levels below the entrance.

I have begun the task of moving the workshops down to the center of the fortress. A large workshop area has been designated with stockpiles one level above. These stocks should be linked to the minecart system.

A caravan has just arrived.

I noticed a buildup of random animals within the new dining room. I went to make a pasture for them only to discover that TheSponge had already designated the pasture. The pasture only contained one animal because the others were killed by the werebadger.

A migrant wave of 10 dwarves has arrived with no useful skills. I guess I could forge another 10 iron picks.

4th Sandstone year 551

Traded a few boxes of rock crafts for random textiles and materials. You never know when a dwarf will get the urge to work with alpaca wool and raw glass.

3rd Timber 551

The workshop and kitchen area is now complete and work has begun on moving some stockpiles. The masons have been set to work creating enough doors for the bedrooms. Smoothing the dining room is a larger task than I thought and I may have to enlist the help of extra workers.

The spiral passage has been mined down to the second cavern and is awaiting the discovery of the third cavern. Tracks are being carved in preparation of the stockpile move.

The Mayor has become self important enough to start mandates and demanding rooms. I will have to make a nobles quarter to keep him happy.

After much searching (I was beginning to think there was no third cavern) the third cavern has been breached. Work on the spiral can now continue.

1st Opal year 551

The dining room is now fully smoothed and ready for engraving. Every dwarf has a room and every room has a door. A child has withdrawn from society and is now running around a craftdwarfs workshop.

Tested entrance bridge to see if it works. It does (wouldn't I look silly if it did not in later years). Two dwarves sustain minor injuries and I should really set up a hospital in any case.

The child has completed their great work with little drama. It is a turkey bone table studded with lead (for health) and encircled with turkey bone, tourmalines, opals and highwood. I shall put it in the dinning room in addition to the highwood chair (which I forgot to place).

The spiral rampway has been dug down to the 3rd cavern layer. I have ordered the construction of nobel bedrooms and a hospital with adjoining well.

The magma sea has been breached. It comes with an adamantine pipe in case any of my predecessors feel like a bit of Fun.

Not much room for the expansion of the great hall, but lots of progress being made in a year. I'm not sure what is more dory though, enormous minecart tracks to bring the ore down or giant magma pump stacks to bring the magma up.

I've never needed a larger grand hall.

1st Obsidian year 551

Three deaths mar and otherwise (mostly) peaceful year. A miner decided to channel the tile they were standing on during the well construction project. For some reason three dwarves came to do this job even though the channels were designated one at a time. I hope the dwarves do not mind blood at the bottom of their well.

10th Obsidian year 551

The well is complete as well as a hospital and noble bedroom area which should be large enough for now. I have ordered memorial slabs for the three dead miners as I hold out no hope of reclaiming the bodies (if anyone wants to try, go ahead).

1st Granite year 552

So, the year is over. It has been a rather uneventful year of consolidation. Military was almost entirely neglected but this was ok because the only outside threats were a few thieves and a werebadger. We have a bridge to hole up in, a dozen miners and a lot of ore that could be turned into something. In the end the resource rich layers did not see much action so I am sure there is a lot more metal waiting to be mined.

Most of the year was spent on finding the caverns and constructing a nice place to live. Very little metalworking took place, I mostly made silver doors and iron pickaxes. The engraved slabs for the three dead miners are queued but not constructed or built. They will need to be placed. Booze is also a bit low at the moment.

The spiral minecart run is entirely dug out and tracks are designated and almost carved. I did not actually test the tracks so hopefully they work. The extra space can be used for more tracks. I would make a miniature fortress just above the magma sea which imports food to sustain a burrow of elite metalworkers. But that is just me. The wiki claims that minecarts can be used to transport magma and that sounds like the most Fun option at the moment.

The top levels are now unorganized and mostly deserted. Someone interested in military could sort all that out. The farms could be moved further underground.

In short I present a solid base to do something crazy with. Unless of course those three deaths trigger a tantrum spiral early in the third year, who even knows how the new emotions system works.

What happened to the warhammers I had queued? Are they in a stockpile somewhere waiting to be used?

I am not sure where they went. It is likely that they were not produced due to job cancellation because at that point we did not have many silver bars. Or perhaps I cancelled them.
