Does anyone have a possible date that Zero-K will be released on Steam, as I'm anxious to have many people join in and have battle with

You are a funny guy USrankFalcon7617, i like that :)

On a serious note though there are couple of condicions that MUST be satisfied before Steam release, being:
- the law (association stuff etc)
- the engine (new engine is needed)
- the lobby
- the overall infrastructure (and its ability to support new player base)

There are other things as well that would be nice for Steam release such as:
- balance improvement
- sea combat redesign
- finished singleplayer campaign (i dont think we are gonna get it anytime soon)
- map quality improvement (my project goal http://zero-k.info/Forum/Thread/9969?postID=109434 )
- and more of course as there is always room for improvement

Here i made a brief Steam roadmap for you all :)
Anyway the bottom point is that it coming... eventually!

Do we need the new engine? If so then someone new from this forum had better become a knowledgeable engine developer.

Yeah I think we need to get on the latest engine update as soon as possible without performance taking such a unknown hit because it true, a lot of our playerbase have early 2000 components or even worse components from 2000's but still worse then some stuff released in 1990's :P

There is a noticeable performance hit for most windows users. It is not just old hardware.

My components aren't that old and I suffer a lot just because its dual core and AMD card .. also have visual glitches due to AMD..

Regarding roadmaps - there are at least 3 steam roadmaps now, shame the first item on roadmap isnt make 3 roadmaps, we could be making some progress otherwise..

... you didn't give any data on it that could be used to fix the problem :<

Are there? I only know of https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Infrastructure/wiki/Steam-Roadmap but no "core-dev" really commented on it.
Which one is official? (whatever that would mean?)
The last status-post on steam is still that the game will be greenlit "in some weeks now." = unrealistic.
In current state it is totally useless to just throw more Lua or models or whatever at the game. For example there is now yet again changes to basic stuff like camera and UI. I could make my own versions of such widgets too, but it would bring zero progress, instead of "more" it needs decision to "use this." And it is like that in all areas.
And any thread about about making some choices (map pool, player limits) gets posting of "buuuuuuuut what if I maaaaybe want to play Trolololo with 30 players?! I liiiike that!"

I believe current infrastructure is unable to cope with a large increase of playerbase.
I believe that the effort which will be required to scale is much more than "code tuning", because current approach and protocols make no sense and WILL fail.

No "core-dev" commented on this:
https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Infrastructure/wiki/Infrastructure-performance

I believe it is important to assess current infra... because if it is failing with order of magnitude less than the target number of players, asking people to contribute time to an infrastructure that will never be able to scale is a lack of respect for the time of others.

Proceeding with steam launch despite serious concerns regarding the reliability and scalability of the infrastructure is a sure way to kill the last hope that players have to see a playerbase increase. That would also be totally irresponsible.

Heh, I'll get started on a new roadmap, where the first item is to make 4 roadmaps.

Are there benchmarks somewhere for this, or some particular reason the new engine runs slower for some people?

My hardware is too good to notice a difference and I'm not sure if linux users are affected anway.

All real benchmark data - which is not subjective observations - is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11ocRyWsP_w1_FTrfIzKhQYtzUBzfd5nX0rANDh1yfn4/edit#gid=761876808

It also contains instructions on how to run more tests. Submission of more data is recommended.

Here is a much more directed version of a benchmark tutorial https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Benchmarks/wiki/Basic-Benchmark-Tutorial
