i think not.
since a fully upgraded com is expensive and the player owning it should not have it wiped out by a single 550 resource unit

My Com has 11k health when fully morphed. But again, costDamage = costHealth aught to come into play here.

But an increased base health would be prefable, especially to the suggest changes I offered in one of my topics.

It should 1 hit some coms. If you make artycom or ranged support comm I don't see why it should have exceptional health.

I don't want to go around nerfing anti-heavy units for the sake of the comm and I don't want to buff the comm to 1 man army levels. Comms could be a bit cheaper and the system is in place to fiddle with it without a new release but it is dangerous to do for balance. I don't want the commander to start dictating the game and require morphing every game.

As for skuttle it is hard to use and easy to spot for. It is to stop people building a single big thing and just charging it in. To make them support their large units. But that role would not be changed much if it lost a bit of damage so that could happen.

I sort of like the one-man army idea behind coms. That was the idea in Total Annihilation, and most *A mods have kept with this theme. Let's face it, ZK still owes a lot of design to OTA.

Why do I like powerful coms? They make the game unique and set it apart from other RTS games. Most RTS games start out with no units, just constructors or some sort of starting lab, or both. You go through that initial resource-gathering, slow-building start that sort of makes the game boring. Having powerful, versatile coms can break up some of the pre-game monotony.

I think the commander upgrade cost is one of those things that offsets the "one-man army" idea. By the time you've spent the tons of required metal to fully upgrade your com, you SHOULD have a one-man army. How is this different from a Dante, or any other "T3" units? It's an expensive unit of limited utility that requires a ton of resources and can easily be brought down if unsupported.

Very true, Context. I'll have to second the notion of more powerful commander units. While a Level 1 Commander is free and thus not as sturdy, a fully upgraded commander unit should be buffed and have enough health to stand up against units.

As a non-ta/*a player, I do not agree the idea to make commander one-against all.

Thats simply why I would play RTS games light kill heavy.

for the cost comm upgrades dont really pay. Since you can only have one comm. You would think that your comm should have a better cost benefit ratio then normal units

Lets put commander ends as baseline and see where this debate goes :)

Comm is also taken out of battle when morphing

Yeah morphing is really bad.. it would be good if it could morph while moving..

There's not many true RTS games out there, I think ZK should stop turning into an RPG and instead start to keep up the desire for a true RTS.

I repeat myself: Commanders should be commanders. No experimental weapon platforms; no porc-busters; none of the current existant unit roles.

It should be a unique unit with the ability to turn the tide of battle with other means than sheer hp, firepower, speed or range. There already are several high hp, high firtepower, long range units, units with shields, units that jam, units all kinds of weapons and so on. I really don't see a reason to add another such unit only for the sake of being a players avatar.

Instead let a commander be the very unit that represents the game and the player. Zero-K's scale and awesomeness and the player's style and choices.

Nerfing Skuttles, which - like nearly all cloaked units - can be guarded against very easy, will result in turning the unit useless. Simple as that.
The argument that 5'000 metal units should not be countered by 550 metal units which require insane micro, while they in return can be countered by 100 metal in units with less than half the required micro is REDUNDANT!

guarding against skuttles is not easy. when my com got killed i was in 3 shields had 2 llts and my com has 2 beam lasers at full morph. i didnt even get to fire a single shot before it all died 2 one single skuttle

Harvey, you hardly ever need more than one shield. To counter skuttles spam dirtbag, fleas, or anything cheap and have them patrol in front of important/expensive units.
Just cause you don't know how to counter something doesn't mean it's not easy.

The Com is expensive and most importantly, unique. You can only get it once.

Back in TA, commanders weren't made of paper. They were fragile, but they had something to counter it with. A fast-repeating D-Gun. As long as you had energy, you could shoot how many you wanted in rapid succession.

Since there's a delay on many abilities now, only mentioning that you need to purchase the upgrade and morph for it it at ~1000 metal, the commander units of ZK are made of paper in comparison.

Wet paper.

Commanders should definitely go out with a bang.

skasi do you always have a flea/dirtbox spam going on? no? then how in hell do you propose i stop the first skuttle the enemy makes from taking out a unit i spent nearly 3k on?

Skuttle has a huge decloak radius, you just need a couple units to keep your com safe.

> Balanced Annihilation has perfect commanders.
Nah, they are too strong at game start, and become too much of a liability by mid/end game (except dgunning the rare krog a newbie sends out alone). Thats why you have combombing, and self-ding coms for metal to tech.

The only time I find a skuttle annoying is near start the enemy has missile turrets up so I can't patrol in front. I am just getting a HLT up when bam a skuttle jumps into my commander killing him and HLT. I have had this a few times. The key is in the jump. If skuttle misses and comm moves well then all you lost is HLT.

But in general I agree with lucky luckywaldo7.
