Sounds too soft

IMHO the biggest problem with the Zero-K SFX is that the sounds are just too "soft". These are machines of war, but the firing and hit SFX for many of them make them seem like a peashooter. I mean, listen to a pillager firing. We're supposed to believe that a heavy artillery is producing that sound? As another example, a recluse rocket hitting its target. It just sounds so soft. Even some of the sounds that are decent, like a leveler firing, are too quiet to give the proper effect.

I play with sound off, nobody here does sfx, it is probably one of the least cared about or properly developed features. Big battles end up just sounding like white noise anyway with the amount of overlapping sounds.

Yet, there are other projects with great sound effects and friendly licenses just waiting to be cherrypicked!

A wild github appears!

Some firing/impact sounds are very 'soft' indeed and plop plop plop-style at times. Those two examples could do with a bit more 'boom' but Pillager already makes good noise when the projectile hits.

Seems hard to find a compromise between loud/epic/impressive audio and unnerving noise when the sounds of dozen/hundreds units blend together.
Especially shrill/high-pitched sounds get annoying very fast.
Some units (artillery!) can be alive & shooting for a loooong time.
It also has to sound good at different zoom levels.
For some units I am glad that they error on the 'too soft' side.

The sounds in zK are (mostly/attempted to) credited to their orginal sources, which is nice.

If all the sounds are too soft then turn up your sound volume. If you think the relative volumes between units are off could you give particular cases so that they can be fixed? I don't agree with the Pillager comment though.

USrank[Evo]ForbodingAngel thanks for the extra sounds. I am not so sure that they are overall better than the current ones but some bad ones in ZK can be improved.

The license might be a worry because I took some care to get suitable licenses when I collected most of ZKs sounds and attribution licenses weren't appropriate. The aim was to be able to be in linux distributions but that was a while ago so our needs may have changed.

All the sounds used in evo are CC or PD. The ones that mention fresound are derivatives (as in I edited them - usually fairly extensively and the files themselves should have the author attribution in them) of the originals on freesound. All of which were cc or pd.

There are quite a few that I made from scratch.

I understand wanting to have attribution for each specific one though in a separate doc.

And GF it's not that they are too soft, by too soft he means too puny. Iirc the glaive has a pretty sad sounding pew pew when it fires.
