Being without a job at the moment and having fallen in love with ZK I figured I could spend some time doing something for the community, so I got this weird idea to start writing a blog about ZK. http://www.emblis.blog.com/Please check it out and tell me what you think. Cheers! Emblis

Nice writeup Emblis, keep up the good work i'd say :-) You are totally right about the reclaim. Would be interesting to hear what others think about the nano-module vs the E-moudle on a reclaim heavy map. Some other things to note about the map the slopes are a bit random at places. Look at the F2 map carefully with a vehicle and a bot. the trees make long range weapons less effective since there is a big chance a missile will hit a tree when shooting at max distance. ;-)

I've never porced middle on Altair. Just use the hills there to hide your army (the small mapsize means radars can see pretty much anything) and wait there to surprise any group of raiders for additional reclaim. Instead of porcing middle I usually porc north and south, as that's where the metal is at - the middle of the three spots even has double output. Trees are usually only reclaimed/mowed down when I want to provide my LLTs with better los. Oh by the way: ololol a blog!

Looking good. Would you be interesting in doing some similar blogging on the indiedb page?

Nice! This is the page GF was talking about: http://www.indiedb.com/games/zero-kThe only news that gets there currently is what I copy-paste from website news but releases tend to be kind of fragmented and boring. A more human touch would be good.

Please no trollfaces on indiedb. :O

I had hoped to add some comedy with the picture and I also think it does a great job of conveying our general feelings when in a similar position :P My goal is to be both informative and thought provoking with the blog while not having an all to serious attitude about it. Also, what exactly would you have me write for indiedb? I made an account and are currently lurking about to see what other people are writing.

I don't have much of an idea what Indiedb wants. They probably don't want things that require a lot of game knowledge to understand but beyond that I have no idea. Filling out the features area with blog type posts on features and their uses is probably worthwhile. Many types of things could go there.
-
Unit spotlights that tell you how a unit works, it's features and usage.
-
Map variation and overview
-
Other small features we take for granted; how air works, flat balance, economy, reclaim....
-
Maybe specific features; overdrive and how it works in economy, terraform, shields, cloak, self microing units...
-
Weapon types? Unit types? General flow?
-
Even obscure or not-so-obscure UI features.
I cannot think of all the stuff that could go there. I think there is a lot of wiggle room too; it could be a straight up feature exposition, a blog type discussion with some opinion, simple tutorial, advanced tutorial... Basically internet type content is good and we don't have much of it.

We could perhaps add some of Emblis's posts to the strategy section of the site. Stuff like 'how to counter rushes' seems like just the thing to include. Then, when it's wiki-ized, it's possible for other knowledgeable people to also add to the articles.

I have made a draft for indiedb. http://emblis.blog.com/2012/02/13/draft/It is password protected since I do not intend to post it on my blog, pass is is ZK

I don't like the "there are allot of rts games out there" approach, 'cause there aren't. I don't like any of the comparisons, they're not needed and always wrong. The learning curve is a lie. ZK is not complicated at all: You build a factory, economy and go rape the enemy. You're confusing "complicated" (wtf is this?) with "complex" (simple, yet never old/boring).

So you are basically suggesting I rewrite it to be more of a feature article instead of a comparison.

Btw indieddb = desura. Same text will be used on desura when we publish there so making it sond attractive is good idea :)

If you want to go for comparison talk about the automation philosophy. Also the learning curve is a bit redundant. I sort of agree with Skasi, it is reasonably easy to start off but after that there are 100s of units worth of depth. And it's not any worse than other RTS, SCII may look simpler on the surface but there is A LOT of timings, intereactions... so much stuff. Now I realise I fell into the trap of writing by committee, this rarely works. I'll leave what I said but I want to stress that most content is probably good. If you don't cover a feature here someone may cover it in the future.

Also grammar and choice of words is important on these things. After all, they're first impression and have to be flawless - ZK is better than a commercial game, not anywhere near as bad. Some sillies might even start thinking it's worse when stumbling upon a paragraph full of little errors. I think this shouldn't be a problem when half a dozen people read through the article and fix it up before it's posted though. Just sayin'!

I said it was a draft, I did not even spell checking it it once before posting it :P

I will be following your blog Emblis. I really like the idea, and I believe that initiatives like this are really important for the community of Zero-K. It increasing overal player skill, and lures more players into Zero-K, which are both good things.

I have completely rewritten it, making it more of an introduction/review of the game. It is not spell-checked or edited yet but I do think it looks much better then previous version.
