Have you ever considered designing externally assembles mega-units?
Each type of unit may have like 3 or up to 5 different "sub-systems" produced at different factories, then they have to be assembled together at some area providing enough energy.

Only "assembled megaunit" I'd want would be a floating barge you could build defenses and shields and jammers and whatnot upon.
