Made these for SWL and am just posting them here so others can use it as well if something like this is needed.

The files are named by rank_elo.png where rank is from 1 to 9 and elo from 0 to 5.

In weblobby they're now being used to represent level, mapping it using e^-x: The second stripe is already at level 7, but the star requires level 131. ELO is represented using different shades: Each one is a 200 Elo bracket, starting from <1400(Bronze) up to >2200(Ruby).

I like the idea, however the top three colours don't have a logical progression. It is confusing that gold is in the middle. I could implement this system with three elo brackets using the chobby icons.

The rectangular ones in the above look odd.

The main idea is just gemstones > precious metals, their ordering is pretty random indeed(Why Ruby after Emerald?). Still, having the 2 extra brackets adds quite some important details and the progression in "shinyness"(saturation/contrast) should help visualize the intended order. My elo is closer to the starting 1500 than to Klon's, but Klon and me are the same bracket on zk site.

I don't want to rival Chobby's icons, I already know you have your own ideas, and displaying ELO is not one of them.

I agree about the issue with coloring. While you could train people to understand it, only the first three make sense intuitively.

However, in general I dislike the idea of combining levels and elo. It becomes a bit too colorful where I usually only care about one type of info.

I think I would much rather have only the level displayed by default (as icon) - as it is now, where elo would be shown as a number on mouse tooltip and also always visible for battleroom players.

PS: ZK(S) should probably clarify how rank icons look or users might end up confused if things are too different. Lobby client devs should follow those guidelines (for multi-server lobby clients that might mean two sets of lobby icons if we want to use something else for uber).
PSS: Not saying Chobby's best, but it's a worthwhile discussion. What do users think they want?

I agree with the 'too many colors' sentiment. It only makes sense to have at most 3 or 4 colors otherwise nobody will be able to remember the ordering.

I also think there are too many rank icons. Ranks are based on exp, which is arbitrary and used to be for unlocks but now is meaningless. Also the progression doesn't make much sense, for example a player that's played 1500 games might get a star, but so does a player that's played 10,000 games. If you were going by order of magnitude then you'd only need 5 ranks (for 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000 games played).

Also in a real military rank system usually more bars is higher rank, so a single chev single rocker would never come after 3 chevs (and 3 chevs is the minimum that goes with a rocker). Of course that won't fit in the icon space, but it's confusing as is.

I think it'd also be good to have only ranked (for elo) games count towards rank, ie COOP/Chickens/etc don't count.

The way I see them is: wood mud, steel, gold, aluminium oxide, aluminium oxide, aluminium oxide :D.

If you want to make colors look like gems, you have to draw them more like gems. They can't simply be recolored as it will look as aluminium oxide variant all along.

I was going to comment on having different shading for gemstones but zenfur OP.

There has already been at least one thread with multiple icon sets for exactly this concept. In the example I linked icons get better/cleaner later into the discussion.

On the topic in general:

I would like more variety for elo than for levels. In other words, elo should be based on color or shape depending on which has more options (eg. 6 colors and 9 shapes would mean use shapes for elo). Elo is more meaningful than level past the first dozens of games.

Furthermore, I would like to see a combination of both Elo and Levels (or Experience). Example:
n = level^0.5 * ELO [?]
This number would be used to indicate "progression" or "achievement". The idea is that initially players should progress fast simply by playing games. As time passes and experience increases, the focus shifts and progress is achieved through self improvement, playing competitive and trying to climb the ladder. (...)

I don't much care for complicated ladders. :P
Bragging rights are good and all but they don't do you much good if nobody can read them.

I made a thing. It'd probably be better if the stars weren't hacked in.

Skasi I agree with you regarding swapping elo/level. Just didn't do it because it would be very much against the usage of similar icons in other places around zk.

RUrankAdminikinz also suggested to do the colors procedurally, having an "endless" number of inbetween shades. Weblobby kinda failed at rendering the hue-rotate filter though :/ Maybe I can do it in some other way.

A combination of both would be an alternative, but that would likely misrepresent @zenfur and PLrankniktu

I agree, the rectangles do not make sense.

Not trying to rival Chobby's icons seems pointless as, eventually, we should use exactly one icon set. I don't think you know what my ideas are. I like the simplification by USrankaeonios because it takes what I consider to be the best colours and shapes and removes the rest.

I prefer the simplified ranks, but I don't really care about level anyway.

As for ELO I'd like to have more challenging skill groups. Half of active players being in the top bracket is a joke. Widening the existing brackets wouldn't be an option either, because it would throw all the "plebs" in the same bracket just to reserve one for the top. Btw, CZrankAdminLicho even suggested 10 different shades. In the end the top colors should be so rare, that they aren't seen most of the time anyway. They'd just be splitting up the "gem league".

I also don't mind if you find a better set of colors.

If you want 10 ranks use 10 reasonably distinct colours and order them around a colour wheel. Any other method is non-obvious.

That made me curious. If it's not too much trouble, could you post statistics about the arithmetic mean, median and other average elo ratings in another thread, please?

Here's a random shot of All Welcome(with simplified level ranks à la aeonios). There's not even a single green/red playing. At the time, Anarchid is the only logged in user with one.
[Spoiler]
This is how I imagine them, being so rare that most people don't even have to care about their ordering.

I actually tried direct ELO -> Color hue mapping. It starts from red and then goes green and finally blue.
[Spoiler]

An alternative would be giving out fully custom icons to players above a specific ELO. Comparable to how the top 10 had trophies in zkl iirc (just that it wouldn't require additional icons next to the player).

There was proposal to even directly represent levels 1- 100 and elo brackets at the same time.
I think it was by LuckyWaldo somewhere in forum history..

If you make it work, we can switch site and lobbies and ingame to it, no issue.

CZrankAdminLicho this one? :P
Theres more luckywaldo posts in the same thread. Anyway, I'd say 16x16 is not enough for 100 levels.

We could use colors from Chili Deluxe Player List to represent elo. They go from red to orange to yellow to white.
