One does not spam swifts when the enemy has no air. Swifts are basically an AA unit.

I thought swifts were raiders.

Not really, no. They can be used for raiding and harassment but they're difficult to control and easy to counter and don't do much damage at all.

I'll keep that in mind. Now, what kills mex very fast, is cheap, and can run away in a plane fac? Swift takes >30 sec due to strafe.

If you're planefac, and the enemy has no air, you build ravens. Lots of ravens, followed by wyvern and/or thunderbird.

How do you use thunderbird efficiently? I've tried using it, but it is pretty hard.. Am I doing it wrong? Sending it in first then following up with an airstrike?

Tbird is difficult to use because they're hard to control. They will always bomb in a straight line so you have to line them up such that they'll hit as many enemy units and as few friendly units as possible. Disabling the enemy's porc is usually also effective.

You do not follow up a tbird strike with an air raid, but with ground units. Raiders like glaives are particularly good as they can chase down the disarmed enemies before the disarm wears off and do a good deal of dps for cheap.

Thunderbird is supposed to assist ground assaults, not another air strikes. You usually help your teammates disabling defenses/enemy army right before assault.

Disabling enemy army before air strike has little sense, as if they have sufficient AA Thunderbird will get shot before it fires, and if there is no AA you need no disabling whatsoever.

Some advanced tactics could be to take AA focus with tankier unit, like wyvern and then follow with T-bird to disable AA and then follow with squisher units like ravens or phoenixes to kill remaining disabled AA, but that requires lots of micro. Thunderbird is difficult to use in any other way than help ground assaults and raids. It excels at disabling shieldballs, static defenses like Stingers. More than one can disable striders effectively, or pre-disable them for racketeers.
