cons and mexes can stay on q, just shuffle the rest of the hotkeys around to give a better feel for weight of units

  • it's generally good to decide what to build based on role, not cost. In some cases cost matters (cheap stuff for an opener, expensive for finisher) but this is already covered in those units' roles (scout/raider; heavy).
  • cost is already the single value printed on the factory UI, people should already know how much everything costs.
  • ordering by cost is how it was in the past; it was found suboptimal.
  • adding options for various orderings people might want has a clutter cost (everyone needs to wade through it when navigating the menu), a maintenance cost (you'd need to either update ordering every time balance changes, or have misordered elements) and a standarisation cost (hard to give/collect feedback when everyone potentially has a different looking interface) and it doesn't sound like this feature is worth those costs.

However you can still personalize stuff if you really want to. Take this file and tinker with it, it contains the button layout. Put it in your <spring>/LuaUI/Configs directory.

The units are ordered such that players should be making units that tend towards the top left of the factory build options. The issue with ordering by cost was that weird unit types (bombs, AA) would often be placed early in the build list, mixed in with the more standard units.

I want to make the top row of the defense tab ordered by cost. Currently it is ordered Defender, LLT, Stardust, Faraday whereas the cost ordering would be LLT, Defender, Faraday, Stardust. This would ruin everyone muscle memory though, it's annoying.

I kinda like Defender as the first because unlike the following ones it doubles as AA so feels more "basic".

Defender should generally be the first static you build in the game though*. If you're thinking chronology, defender makes sense at Q even though it costs more.

*Defender is better at killing off scouts due to higher burst and range. Also picks off swifts and blastwings. Lotus is better for holding off 'assaults' of raiders which tend to occur after the initial scout phase. While the price increase hurt defender, I think the nerf disincentivises making defender nests, but does little to change which singleton static you make.

Given that the cost of statics (and units) can and does change I'm not sure that ordering anything by cost is a great idea.
