When I started I mostly lost to cheese that had a specific counter you had to know beforehand... there were so many variations of cheese that the burden of knowledge was crazy. And not knowing how to break porc.

"Not getting to grips with the game's mechanics."

Of all the things that would cause me to lose the most, that one above would probably be at the top of my list, especially as a newbie to the game. Sure, rts games in general aren't exactly easy to just pick up and play for a newbie to the genre, but deep and complex rts games like Supreme Commander and Zero-K are especially prone to this.

Other common ways for newbies to lose (imo):

- Lacking in attentiveness, which rts games in general are notorious for demanding out of players, which can result in all manner of mistakes, like these below:

- Overestimating/Underestimating your capabilities in some way. (In other words, failing to know yourself from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War".) Some examples of this include:

Slow economy at the start of the game. For the life of me I can't figure out how you can build raiders and constructors and caretakers and generators all at the same time while having only your commander. The constructors are too expensive for that.

USrankFealthas, looks like ShadowWolfTJC didn't get your joke. I, too, most often lose 1v1 because there's a noob on my team. One big issue for me is that teammates and spectators don't seem very inclined to causally help by giving tips of the "maybe if you tried this instead of what you're doing..." or "btw, the shortcut key do that quicker is..." kind. Advancing one's skill involves either trying to figure out your own issues or taking lessons by playing against someone whose skill is way higher than yours and hoping they know how to teach.

USrankShadowWolfTJC, thanks, at least now I know where to find your energy supply ;).
