I don't really enjoy the voting systems in custom lobbies...randoms come in and rob the host of their own lobby!

The host can always use !endvote to abort a vote and can change any setting without vote. He can also kick people, but optimally you would set a password if you only want to play with your friends.

Yeah the host is the room admin. So it's fine the time he's in the room. When he leaves it could be good to automatically have someone becoming the host. Not sure how to chose the new host. Maybe the next host could be the one who stayed the longest time in the room or the one who is the more experimented/elo.
By the way, what is the point to have the !y and !n displayed in the chat during a vote? It just spams the chat..

I have to agree with this to a certain extent.

Especially in big multiplayer games, all sorts of folk just randomly click !y without even thinking.

Just finished Icy Run for the second time?

Some guy clicks "start" and before you know it everybody has voted the game to start for a joyous third occasion.

The game starts and players still have to load up?

Some guy clicks "force" and before you know it everybody (even members of the team prejudiced, ffs) has clicked force start and the game starts ... WITHOUT the high-ranked players that the balancer based the team composition on. That game is inevitably a rout (and it always feels like I am on the team starting without Corvus or Jummy or Firepluk) and not fun.

It would be nice if the host took control of the room from time to time.

I agree. I think ideally polls in custom rooms would be something the host has to explicitly enable:
  • hosters don't expect democracy by default, no other game does this.
  • hosters don't usually know !endvote
  • even if somebody is aware of !endvote, it would be nice to be able to leave the computer for 2 minutes to make tea without people screwing up the room in the meantime

Those all seem to me like ui issues. The UI doesn't make it clear that the host has control and end votes. It would be nice to have an option that the host can enable dictator mode, so they don't have to worry about pesky players inciting civil unrest, but I like the default of giving the players a choice.

I also think all the commandspam should be hidden, or at least shown in its own separate chat/view. But ultimately we need buttons or some gui (autocorrect wanted guidance, which is also appropriate) so hosts don't have to have prior experience to host games effectively.
