Heat Ray sound effect is a bit obnoxious?

Hiya, has there been much discussion about the sound design in the game? I think there are some things that could be improved, I wonder if they are known issues or issues under debate?

One example that really stands out are heat ray weapons. For a super rapid fire weapon, the sound effect is far to pronounced to be spammed continuously like that. It should really have a more subdued hissing or pulsing sound effect, like the beam lasers do.

Unfortunately the three attempts that were taken at replacing it over the years were not successful. If you know how to work with sound, or know someone, it would be great to maybe give it another take.

That's interesting. Is there a github issue or some sort of history in the forums? I did a quick search but didnt come up with anything.

Sound is not my specialty but maybe a fresh set of eyes (ears?) might help...

https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K/pull/1061 is the most recent replacement attempt.

I dont think blackdutchis sound was that bad, maybe just some tweaking to it

I thought the replacement was much better than the original (and current) sound.

If the consensus at the time preferred the original, then maybe my tastes don't match the decision makers -_-;

For such a rapid fire weapon, a light hiss or even something like the minigun sfx from Syndicate Wars would be preferable to the current "the world is ending or my soundcard is broken" effect...

There was no consensus either way, so status quo won.

Both new and old sounds have pretty bad technical quality.

that sound is good, no need to change.

Maybe the volume of the sound relative to the others is a problem? Could be normalised a bit.

Really, engine support for looped in-world sounds would be great. The engine's streaming sound api kind of does that, aside from the inworld stuff (and streaming is limited to like 4 channels).

Maybe something along these lines?

And here's an approximation of continuous fire:

I made it in literally 1.5 minutes so not the finest quality but a good approximation

Probably should make it less ear-drilling but you know
