A friend told me I need to make a forum post to change my account name from Seraphael85 to Seraph.

Stop the change my name thread misinformation - use "contact administrators" button on your profile.

"Seraph" is unfortunately taken by somebody else http://zero-k.info/Users/Detail/397081 You can type names in the search bar top right to see if its taken already. You may still get a name if its taken by an old inactive account though.
