I just played a (weird) match with a friend, a bit after 19:30 minutes a small blob of their shield units runs into a position where I had a gauss turret and a stardust, both on a raised terraformed platform. My opponents' units successfully took out the gauss turret, but did not seem to be able to fire at the stardust while under the shadow of the terraformed platform, nor when the units were moved away to try and gain distance... though it was able to shoot at them just fine. I'm wondering if this is expected behavior, perhaps the units were unable to draw a trajectory on the stardust because it was somewhat occluded by the other terraformed spike, and they required a really specific arc in order to hit it? Or is this sort of thing supposed to be wiped out by the earlier patch.

Units generally can't shoot through terrain. See how here only one Felon is able to shoot the Stardust. Felons use their shield charge to fire, and all of their shield regen was being spent by continual fire from the Stardust. This is why the Felons stopped shooting.

Thugs have short ranged ballistic projectiles. They cannot shoot up either of those spires except possibly by being so close that the spire occludes the turret on top. The Gauss died to the Felons.

Thanks googlefrog. I initially thought something like that was probably the case, but became more confused when I watched the replay a few times... I'm surprised the thugs have that much trouble hitting my stardust, but if that's the problem then all makes sense.
