If your commander needs drones, pay metal for it

The drone experiment was fun, but it's time to remove them

I have mixed feelings on the drones. I like the idea, and want it to work - but have reservations about certain aspects.

Firstly and already stated, skirmisher behaviour vs drone.
Next I do wonder if the drone's drift is still a little too far from the commander at times.

Strike commander seems able to counter guardian commander very nicely and has found a good niche as an adaptable anti-shield, anti-hover, anti-jj gambit. Meanwhile guardian has some very... Commanding roles that it can play too, more in synergy with a surrounding army.

If you have a good case for why the drones should be removed and not tweaked, please maybe suggest something the commander can be given back in order to compromise.

Lastly, I think recon commander might finally be seeing the least use of all now. Very interesting shift we're in.

Yes, everything is simple, the commander scrolls through the levels and gets a drone for free, at the end he is given a drone that slows down and deals a lot of damage, that is, it actively hits the enemy and the enemy is forced to build aa, although the drone is free, and aa is paid

commander levels are not free though. so the drone is only free if you were planning on heavily upgrading comm

The drones are free. You can't target them directly. You can't target them reliably at all by any non-aa means. Neither you, nor your opponent knows what the hell they'll decide to do next, — sometimes they'll fly through the entire map chasing stuff, other time they just stop dead in their tracks and you need to do some pre-superfluid manuevers specific to every unit in the game to get even a single hit on them. Drones invalidate early raiding by some of the more prominent raiders as much as Swifts do in larger team games. Viper has more DPS then a Moderator, and you can't snipe it out of a bunch of normal drones. Things you don't want to target drones still do. I don't think even the free anti-Raven hat is fixed, so Guardian, with its generous amount of health still requires 1 shot more. No, you can't "just go Strike", because drones fly low enough to detect a cloaked Commander, i've seen it happen, not once.

If the above ref to going strike is in response to my reference to it, I'm not talking about cloaked D-Gun strike. I'm talking about ranged double redback gun strike. It's a Guardian killer. Agree with many of your points though.

Not being able to target drones is extremely frustrating UI. As is the semirandom way they move.
You have to micro kodachis in very particular ways to even hit the damn things!

It would be great if drones were a type of dgun rather than a type of a passive ability. Maybe stockpiled.

Drone upgrades are expensive as heck, assisting drone construction is not free either. If i do invest in drones i would expect them to act as screen and to discharge alpha_strike_damage_type enemy shots.
(note: despite context op not saying explicitly about guardian com, otherwise it is not problem related to drones but to a specific commander type.)

Drones also ruin artemis... have to switch to manual fire :\

IMO the interaction of drones and AA is annoying. First, AA targets my poor commander who just happens to be near the front. Second, the drones just end up being dead all the time regardless of how many theoretically are on tap.

(Actually the behavior of AA going after air units on factories or repair pads is bad in general. This exposes the very artificial separation in AA and non-AA guns.)

I do like the part about drones being able to spot sneaky cloaked units.

is there an option to remove e.g. drohnes from the 'units to insta-delete' list of artemis? so it ignores them?

That is a longstanding ticket.

what about no extra drones, but drones are better? you need to pay for them but they are more useful? Something like that?

Well.. since it's long standing, I can touch it. I already am touching some of the turrets.

I haven't tried using drones and can't say I have seen all that much of them, but it feels like they're too good at wasting the enemy's shots, considering that they're a free unit (over time), and that their tiny size and flight means a lot of those wasted shots don't even hit.

Only a few factories have access to cheap fluff in Zero-K. Also they count not only as free ground fluff, but also as free air fluff.

Can we pretty please have this looked at?...
I bet this is not how zk supposed to look like both in early and late game, early game it ruins raiding and late game it ruins both chainsaw and artemis
And raiding is already ruined by not so long ago unit stats changes(fat mexes, fat coms, energy fueled rearm on bombers, etc), now it's getting really hard to do a good raid in early team games :(

They now have less weapon range so are less annoying to fight with raiders. The anti-bait unit state is something that should happen at some point.
