A friend of mine is looking for a free strategy game for a mac without graphics card. I know this is completely crazy. Why does he not get a non-apple computer? Then he could even afford a graphics card. Do you have any suggestions for this poor guy?

Related: if they fix OSX support for the Spring engine, it would be awesome to see what one of those M1 chips could do in Zero-K. Supposed to be the fastest single-core performance out there, and the graphics should be entirely within reach too.

Both Starcraft games should still work on OS X, SC2 might have performance issues especially with no GPU, so your friend may have to put up with Broodwar instead (good luck!). Both games are free to play nowadays (though the official Broodwar ladder requires buying the Remastered edition, or alternatively using a third party ladder).

0 AD should work on OS X otherwise (it's RTS in the vein of Age of Empires), and if he's not looking for an RTS, there's always Battle for Wesnoth, Freeciv, OpenTTD and co depending on what kind of game he likes.

Thanks for the recommendations and sorry for my late answer. I think the best ones are Istrolid, Starcraft, 0 AD and Warzone 2100.

The problems are that you cannot build a city in Istrolid, SC 1 Free Edition seems to be only available on Mac through a dubious link (while all other versions including SC 1 Free Edition for Windows are directly accessible through their website), SC 1 Remastered is not free (maybe Blizzard thinks that Mac users have money and are therefore supposed to buy the remastered version?), SC 2 requires a graphics card and Warzone 2100 has bad graphics. Luckily, there is still 0 AD. But Apple warns the user to install software that is not from their appstore and even though it is open-source, the Mac user does not trust something that is not from Apple. :D

New windows laptops are trying to enforce a Windows store on the haplessly computer illiterate. The store is pinned to task bar and you need to essentially 'unticking simple settings' to install any downloadable from the web. Of course, when you do this you get the warning "Some programs can potentially slow down your computer and have unintended consequences." The iPhone and stronger internet connections was truly the gateway drug these companies needed to push the 'total complete package platform store' and it's going too far.
