I'm just wondering, who made the awesome soundtrack for the Zero-K game? I have been loving the music and wanting to download it(or even buy it if it's released), but I can't find out who it is. Could someone answer this for me?
Also, anyone else think the music is epic and really gets you into the game?

...I think these are from some music database and licensed Public Domain. For second question you can find them in development site:

Um...I already knew how to get to the Peace and War sections. I was asking if there was a way I could download the music. I figured out how after, even though they are all .ogg

And from investigating further I discovered the composer's name to at least some of the songs. I'm going to go from there and see if I can find any other composers that make up the soundtrack, if any.

Music is by Denny Schneidemesser, it's free to use apparently (wasn't made specifically for ZK, he probably doesn't even know it's being used here o_0).

You can find the sources here:

.mp3 format! Thanks!
Yeah I did a little of my own research and found his name. I was just wondering if there was any other composers. Either way, my questions have been answered. Thanks a lot everyone! ^_^

I've contacted the creator of this music.

[1uP]archl, seriously do you think even as a 2nd thought that this music is "Public Domain"? I don't think so for many serious reasons! This music is professional style and the author would give away all his copyright? No, not in this world, and the only respectable "Public Domain license" is CC Zero. https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/
It must explicitly be stated on the site, and there is no such thing on Denny's site!

Denny Schneidemesser has told me that his music, just because it can be downloaded doesn't mean that you automatically have a license to use his work. He told me that he doesn't know about any GPL and that all his Creative Commons licensed work serve under a non-commercial clause.

I know this will all raise your fury, but I don't care. At least leileilol will be proud. Personally I wish that this is all a bad dream.

Last time I checked, ZK was a non-commercial open source game.

Anyway, it's cool that you succeeded in contacting Mr. Schneidemesser. Afaik he has been officially contacted by the ZK dev team, but there never was any answer.

Thank you for your reply. That's interesting.

In the zk-v1.0.5.6.sdz file there are two files:

legal.txt and eowcredits.txt

legal.txt says
"Legal. Zero-K a game for the Spring engine. Copyright © 2008-2010 the 0K development team.

Legal issues are always a headache. What I've not suggested yet are replacements for Denny's music(All I do is come barge in here and say 'you use copyrighted music' but without suggesting what you should do after you remove it, typical me). I'm not sure of replacements as they would change the whole atmosphere of the game.

One idea is this piece "arp me up" http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/159797/arp-me-up CC-BY-SA-3.0. What's most important is what the community and devs want so for the moment this is the last thing I'll post, for the moment, as I now know what the situation is with Zero-K.

[AL]W4RL0K, yes. You are right of course. I'm lucky to have found a new piece of music. This one http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/890465/zero-project-05-appassionata by Zero-project.
It's under CC-BY 3.0, Attribution. Personally I like this and it is in the same genre of music. Tell me what you think. Not all his music in this album "A dying moon" fits but some of it does.

So my 1st serious suggestion of a music piece is Appassionata for the 'peace' folder.

Most of ZK content is not PD, most of the art indeed is some form of CC. Its great that we now know what license Denny Schneidemesser would like to use.

Someone with interest in these matters should update our legal texts.

This game must have started with not so clear goals regarding licensing. It is open source alright...but if it uses open source assets(music, graphics, sounds, other art etc.), I guess nobody knows...yet.

Techmech, I'm not sure what you're getting at, but I believe you are quite wrong.

ZK started as Complete Annihilation, a mod that (like most Spring mods) was not only conceptually derived from Total Annihilation, but actually used the copyrighted assets from TA. But unlike the other Spring mods, CA's stated intent was to replace all unlicensed assets with freely licensed assets (open source, GPL, public domain, CC, etc) so that there would be no question - either legally or ethically - as to the propriety of distributing and playing the mod. This was one of the primary motivations of the CA developers.

That work of switching over to completely free assets was completed by the time CA became ZK.

Since then, however, the devs have been acutely aware of licensing issues and have worked to ensure that the game's assets continue to be free. See for example Saktoth's comment on this thread where he takes a would-be contributor to task for (among other things) attempting to include content with unclear licensing.

I don't know why you think the developers' approach to music would be any different.

The Schneidemesser pieces have explicitly been licensed by the author as CC BY-NC-ND (Creative Commons, Attribution, Noncommercial, No Derivative Works) right here on the author's SoundClick page. ZK complies with all three requirements of the license. ZK is non-commercial, ZK has not made any derivative works, and the attribution is right here in the ZK source distribution and even more explicitly on the ZK website.

So what's your problem?

I've been thinking about suggesting Zero Project too, techmech, but it's got a lot of chant. Besides, thanks for reminding me, found some bit of very similarly fitting music some long long time ago.

Epic Soul Factory

There's music that I think would fit much much better with ZK's atmosphere, but it's different from the current one and too awesome anyway.

Thumbs Up on the Epic Soul Factory! I too found them a bit ago, while I was looking for more freely-licensed music to use for a ZK trailer.

I think for a default soundtrack, though, the Schneidemesser pieces are perfect. I wouldn't want to distribute both the D.S. pieces and the Epic Soul stuff... they wouldn't work well together. You'd want to do one or the other, and I prefer what we have now.

It would be nice to have a way for a user to replace the entire soundtrack, though. As it is you can add new tunes to the rotation, but you can't remove what's already there (since the files are kept as opaque filenames in the Rapid pool).

You planning on making a ZK trailer, CrazyEddie? Very nice! I've been toying with the idead of starting work on another (I made the previous one). I'll take a look at this epic soul factory thing and see if it inspires me. Feel free to ask me if you've got any questions with the videomaking. Also, the #1 complaint of my last trailer was that it wasn't epic enough, so if you make one, please ensure it has heaps of massive stuff happening. :)
