so the basic premise is that instead of clean energy like fusion or wind, the units run on fossil fuels. to get oil you would either get geo spots or mexes for oil production, which would power your units. there could be oil refineries that youd have to build in order to actually use the oil. extra idea, units could always have the smoke coming off of them to represent exhaust. thoughts?

Could be interesting as well if it sorta changed the unit vibe by making stuff slower and tougher.

Wonder if units would have their own internal 'tank'

Regardless, would need someone to actually begin working/testing such a idea.

1. smoke particles lag the game
2. spring is able to make units require energy to fire and move
3. changing building names into refinery and oil pump-jack is no problem

This kind of game already exists since 1997 know as Krush Kill 'n' Destroy (by Melbourne House) except units do not smoke from exhaust.
KKnD is currently the closest to your idea, AFAIK.

Oil is used also in Warzone 2100 which is nowadays free and open source known as "Warzone 2100 project".
Reffineries are not used however in WZ.

Infinite oil wells feel a lot like mexes or geos. Iirc the Supcom geos were themed as hydrocarbons but worked in exactly the same way. So it would be interesting to see something that is drained at a certain rate and becomes harder to extract from. The RTG in Future Wars is sort of close - it is a power plant that starts off with high income that decreases over time. Vespene Gas is is perhaps the simplest form of it.

this exists in Dark Reign (1997). the map has fixed spots, like mex spots, which have a storage capacity and a regenerate capacity. so you get a boost when you cap it, but the extraction volume is reduced till you match the (lower) regeneration rate.

there are 2 ressouces, water and taelon (energy), see at minute 7

since im still just making deftweaks =P i propose a hacky method.. turn mex into a unit that selfdestructs into an invulnerable non target-able/non transportable blocking unit and give it self destruct as a weapon.. allow it to shoot at allies so it triggers on build with a long selfd warmup.hmm no this wont do.. ill think of something better

also i did make this mod but the ai refuses to not try to remake the mex making it a pvp only mod
