Energy expense greater than income but not going down, why?

I've been playing Zero-K for a long time and mostly get it, but this has always confused me.

For example.
My Energy income is +54, my expense is -73.5, it shows <<<<, but my Energy storage still fills up.

Why is this? I'd expect with those numbers my Energy storage to deplete.

It's most likely because of our overdrive mechanic. Any excess energy you have is out into your mexes to mine more metal. And because of that you will always spend more energy than you produce. At the same time, as long as your production and utility energy usage doesn't exceed your production, then your storage will be full.

So if you produce more energy than you need, excess still gets used by mexes, if you have your generators aren't connected to mexes, they don't overdrive and the number would show no drain probably.

I hope this explanation was clear... I think it could be explained better.

Is this in teams? If you have allies with extra energy it will be shared to you to stop your bar depleting.

Nah, I see it in solo too.

I agree it's confusing.

The negative number comes from your energy demand: in-use buildpower, overdrive, and energy-use on cloaking etc.

If you are out of metal, but you still have lots of builders trying to build things, you will have a large energy demand, even though your builders will not actually use the total amount of energy that they are demanding (since they are stalling on metal). In this situation your energy total will increase, even though the demand is greater than the supply.

Ahh! That makes more sense! Thanks!

The negative numbers shows the demand you had enough metal, not the actual drain which is limited by metal.

As an example, suppose you have a metal income of 10, an energy income of 20, and 5 caretakers building a super-weapon. This will count as 50 (10*5) energy demand, even though those 5 caretakers would in reality only be using 10 energy.

The numbers mean the same thing for metal too. If you have 10 metal income and 5 caretakers building, each will demand 10 metal so your metal will show a demand of -50 with arrows that look like <<<<<<. If the UI showed second-to-second storage changes instead then most of the time inflow would match outflow, which wouldn't tell you how much capacity you have to absorb extra income.
