Dear German friends,
I'm thinking about the possibility of doing a PhD at the University of Frankfurt am main and I would like to know what Frankfurt's like. Does/did anyone of you live or study in Frankfurt?
Vielen Dank!

not speaking of personal experience, my impression of frankfurt is that of a soulless buisness town, mostly occupied by bankers and junkies wielding baseball bats (this one is actually based on personal experience :D). its notable features include the stock exchange, an international airport and a number of skyscrapers, which is a rather unusual sight in germany. its ruled since day and age by conservative bullies and tax evaders.

more objectively, there are probably a lot of cities in germany that are both friendlier and more interesting for anyone whos not interested in drugs, finance or shopping.

i have not been in frankfurt for long time each trip. the city was mostly destroyed in ww2, so everything rebuilt is streamlined after the main factor of this city, money.

the soccer fan-community is quite strong, local rivalery with other clubs and their fans (so be careful what you say about soccer clubs or the possibility to end in a plasic bag is high). im personally not involved in soccer fandom at all.

what kind of phd or why frankfurt? if you want recommendations which fit your specs, someone might have something if the goal is to do it in germany ;)

Because non-germans are unlikely to have anything to contribute to his question. I mean, CarRepairer is doing the job of the internet cliché purveyor, but I'm not sure if that falls under "contribution".

I wanted to do a phd using superresolution microscopy to study E. coli (a bacterium), there's this good group in Frankfurt that does really cool stuff. But it's not the only interesting group in the world, so I guess I'll try harder at some other place. I'm not betting on one horse ;)
I justed asked about Frankfurt because my girlfriend said she didn't like the city.
