When people say "never give up in an FFA", they are not talking about building an underwater/terraform empire with one mex to postpone your defeat, what they mean is something like this game:
[spoiler alert] [drama alert]
No matter how much nukes you take to the face, no matter how much detri's explode in you base, no matter how many DRP's wreck your base, DON'T GIVE UP. Once the other players think you are weak and focus on each other, rebuild and strike again. Feed from their wreckages, take their land (=mexes), decentralize your economy and military production (which is sometimes more efficient than building antinukes or other heavy defences). Once you have build 127 mexes, no one can stop you anymore. Flood terraformed bases with hermits that even detri's cannot stop, sacrifice their moho's and starlights to the gods of shiny, fill the skies with swifts and vulture to see all, ravens to strike all. When 20 ducks cannot do the job, you could consider sending 200.
