NOTA's new lobby

The NOTA team has released a new lobby for their game that I wanted to draw attention to. It has a surprisingly professional appearance and IMO does some things a lot better then current ZKlobby. Since lobby redesign is a current task I hope this can give some inspiration.

Windows only for now with linux supporting being planned

Some things I've noted:

-Very nice intro, though I've seen this trailer before
-Much simpler and easier to understand settings, even if some descriptions are missing
-Skirmisher/single player is good, much better then ZKlobby's somewhat hidden skirmisher
-No global chat or messaging? I can see a few other players on but can't talk to them unless in the same game. Interesting decision.
-I don't see the ability to host a battle
-NOTA is still using Spring 94.1? Why?
-Has autodownloader like ZKL and WebLobby
-Attempting to play an AI on the 1vs1 host results in AI instantly removed
-Only 5 maps available on hosts, similar to how EvoRTS hosts started
-Cool liftoff sound on game launch
-NOTA may not be pretty, but on game launch with map Charlie In The Hills I get roughly 3x the fps I would on game start with ZK. I think this is siginifcant as NOTA now uses Chilli for their interface just like ZK.
-Nice bug/infolog reporting screen

I bet it is not open source and violating GPL...

Are you sure they are using chili? Last time I checked they used Red UI.

Is that background an image or a working shellmap?

It is Valles Marineris with some Ps filters.

Yes Chilli is now used you can see for yourself ingame. Must be an old version as IIRC latest chilli doesn't work with 94.1. I can find the source for NOTA but not for the lobby, so I'll ask.

What would violate GPL and why?

Haven't tried this new thing, but I loved previous notalobby, even if it violated GPL or was made by the devil itself. IMO the it was just so much prettier, simpler and better organized than most lobbies I have seen

I don't recall NOTAlobby ever having global chat, so that isn't surprising.

Otherwise, it looks like a fairly standard RTS interface, which is good. The font choice and overall graphic design is a bit questionable, though. Something of an uncanny valley effect, where the presentation is good enough that I'm now automatically comparing it to professional games.

When I start the new lobby, there is a black fullscreen-sized window, without any loadingbar or anything, only mouse pointer. I move it to side and will see if anything happens while I type this.

It had chat. In old lobby versions under "Community" or so you can get a channels list.

Which host?
On notaHost9 !list maps currently returns 60 maps and map manual is here: http://nota.machys.net/map-manual
Originally at launch EvoRTS had *every map ever*, many of which obviously did not work.
The limited mappool was only active for few days before reverting it back to unlimited, because suppossedly "Players are sick of those same maps all the time", with the foreseeable consequences. Currently it is 261 maps, some of which would by zero-K standards be considered broken.

Autodownload is standard feature of all lobbies since a long time..

New NOTA lobby:
1) Setup nota-0.7.2.msi asks where to install.
2) I enter: c:\games\nota
3) It only puts two shortcuts in that folder. The actual files were copied into
...\Documents\My Games\NOTA
and
...\Documents\My Games\Spring\nota\
I was tricked!

Still black window. Would have liked to hear the cool liftoff sound! :/

It's confusing that you mention the trailer, chili, etc. when talking about the NOTA Lobby.
If they didn't make their lobby ingame (which I doubt seeing the .msi), it's probably just the NOTA game, which is a separate component.

I'd like to check out for myself but I'm on Linux.

"Currently it is 261 maps, some of which would by zero-K standards be considered broken."

Wrong.

Also, it's a black window because you're on windows XP.

***************************************************************************************

Their new lobby is quite excellent and is presented the same way that lobbies of large commercial games are presented. They did a fantastic job.

NOTA has used Chili for well over a year, probably several years at this point.

NOTA has a very custom UI ingame that is better than most spring games.

GPL compliant but still closed source. Just go play FAF or something?

Not wrong, but the post is 42 days old and appearently you changed it.
Broken maps were for example map where metalspot detection fails.

No?
Maybe you are confused because I (and others like Jools iirc) had once installed XP (and Linux) in a VM to get more details on reports about your steamcrap not working.
