Trailer:

I assume most of you already know about Istrolid from the usual sunday invitations to play, if not it's a pretty cool RTS about building and designing spaceships from some guys named AUrankAdminSaktoth and USranktreeform.

Greenlight just launched and we'd appreciate votes: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=573017878

I can already see it being released before Zero-K.

Why does it say "Would you buy this game if it were available in Steam?". Some wubs are gonna think they have to pay.

I don't think that's possible to change.

Really remind me of Reassembly http://zero-k.info/Forum/Thread/4439?postID=103681#103681 , that Gimbal topic was a lot of similar games to look if you like this genre.

Btw, who is playing in that image? I could only imagine @Godde being able to micro all those units at once.

For ZK players it might be worth mentioning that there is no UnitAI. So nubs like me gotta learn to use that mouse.

Those are both AI's. AI's are player created in the game and there is a big selection of different kinds.

Godde's micro is possibly more fearsome in this game than Zero-K.

GBrankAdminDeinFreund that's not entirely true. Custom AI can be added to any unit. Both of my fighters automagically grab capture points, attack weaker units, and retreat from anything stronger.

its pretty fun and very easy to access so I think with a bit of luck the future could be good for this game (unlike zk lol)

edit: saw that "looks like galaxial" steam comment, googled it and yeah... its like a carbon copy only way worse

thats pretty lame :P

Actually there is unit AI in the game. Its not as developed as in ZK of course. Probably due to modularity of the created ships. For example close range units will go after nearby targets.

Sweet casual game, can easily get a game in inbetween other activities. The design side is also a way of spending time with the game in a more relaxed, considered way.

GBrank[Fx]Drone Galaxial doesn't seem to have any actual projectile physics, while Istrolid does iirc. Plus Galaxial is not even playable yet so that's an instant 0/10.

Yeah I have nothing against this game, the easy browser style is nice but I'm curious why it looks like the entire art and design of game was just copied off that other game

Perhaps because most other realtime browser based games (including thousands of flash games) have a very similar style too. Or maybe someone liked what they saw and felt like drawing in a similar style.

I dont think thats fair - Istrolid is more cartoonish and stylized in appearance (the modules for example). Both games have the same concept - ships made of visible lego-esque components. Both games have gone for an untextured clear appearance. Nobody wants to render the background of space as a simple black field, ever since Homeworld appeared and blew us away. How else would you go about the art style given these requirements?

Have to agree with BRrankFortaleza here, I had to double check I wasn't actually looking at a reassembly screenshot :D
(Like this one.)

I'll stop promoting a different game in your thread though :P

Reassembly is clearly inspired by Captain Forever, the art style screams homage. Galaxial isn't even a spaceship construction game though. It's totally different to Istrolid, but yes the art style is quite similar: This is just an easy, colourful, minimilist design style inspired by vector art. We deliberately AVOIDED doing the black with colored outlines thing that Battleships Forever, Captain Forever, Reassembly and so many games in this genre do (And we realized there are a lot). There are actually much better games to look to that are similar to Istrolid gameplay wise, there are MANY in this space but mostly obscure abandoned indie titles. Anyone on the Zero-K forums knows that custom units in an RTS has been a bandied about topic for a long time, and we did it a while ago with custom commanders, but that was never a core of the game. Treeform and I definitely played and talked about Captain Forever, which is a shooter (And another browser game with minimilist, though very different, graphics). When we were looking to 'launch' we did our research though, and came up with this:

Battleships Forever - Seems to be the grandaddy of them all: A freeware strategy game with ship design. Won awards, got a fair amount of attention: Notice it is 'still beta' and talks about the full game. It's been like this for 7 years. This is probably most directly the gap we are filling: The promise this game offered.

Captain Forever - Did actually inspire some of our spaceship building ideas, but is actually itself obviously an arcade shooter homage to Battleships Forever.

Gratuitous Space Battles - Similiar, but all AI vs AI. Not a huge amount of real strategy or balance. Just build a crazy ship or fleet. Less blocky than us.

Gimbal - Arcadey shooter which is entirely online multiplayer, not a very active community. You have to purchase the full game to unlock everything, which feels kind of pay-to-win.

Kerbal Space Program - Very different obviously but there is some appeal overlap and Tree and I definitely both love this game.

Others include: Starwright, Blockade Runner, Battle Fleet Engineer, Block Ship Wars, Fragmentum.

Then there are the minecraft-type ship builders: StarMade, Robocraft, RawBots, Space Engineers.

We didn't realise going into this it would be such a populated genre. I guess it's pretty hard these days to do an idea that's not already been done. But that's okay, Zero-K is just OTA + 19 years, and it's awesome.

at first i thought it would be kerbal deathmatch but more and more it reminded me of http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion_II:_Battle_at_Antares/Warship_technologies

AUrankAdminSaktoth are you saying you are not aware of Warning Forever? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warning_Forever

No, but I guess it's the father of them all, it's even mentioned in battleships forever. Seems just really like a shooter though, rather than a spaceship construction game?
