My question is simple:

What were the developers thinking the day they choose to replace such cool unit names by those nonsenses?

The only one that kind of make sense is "doomsday" replaced by "desolator" (even though doomsday was perfectly suitable and didn't need to be changed).

But for the others, I really can't understand why the developers had to change them... what a shame.

I know change can be upsetting for users but in this case, it's way more than that! Just bad taste pure and simple.

(Lucifer....REALLY!?)

You just started playing 3 months ago, so you did not really have the time to familiarise with the old names.

Stop making such flaming thread please, just move on with the new names.

What a constructive intervention of yours.
And so what? Because I started the game 3 months ago I can't have an opinion? And what if I started playing years ago but made a new account?

Do you realize now how useless is your comment?

Please, think before using your keyboard.

If you wanted to make a constructive comment yourself FRrankLordOfTrolls you could try suggesting improvements to Lucifer and Artemis, or whatever other names are particularly bad. (I think Cerberus and Cornea are unlikely to change.)

As it is you've contributed nothing of worth so far ITT.

AUrankAdminAquanim I'm sorry but your comment does not hold.

I raised the subject on the forum for the community to talk about it. This is my first contribution.

Pointing out something that might be wrong IS constructive. This is my second contribution.

Also, I specified that some names - such as desolator - were fine. Again, pointing out a good thing IS constructive. This is my third contribution.

And I implicitly gave a better solution in my comment! DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING. This is my fourth contribution.

But what is not constructive is saying to a regular user "you should not even start talking about it as you just joined 3 months ago.", even though I might have been using the game for years.

In my most humble opinion, I count four contributions so far.

I just hope the community can share their point of view on this matter, with our common willingness to make the game as enjoyable as possible.

Personally I find the name Cornea somehow ugly. I doubt anybody cares, but duh, here you go.

Arguing the toss as to whether your initial posts were constructive or not is even less constructive.

"DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING" has been proposed far more eloquently in the past, but it didn't happen and will not happen because the reasons why renames had to happen still stand.

If you or anybody else proposed improved names for:
Lucifer
Artemis
Cornea
Thresher (turretaaflak)
Toad (jumpaa)
Some of the tanks

I think they'd stand a decent chance of happening. (Remember that "improved" includes the criteria "Not copied from OTA or similar".) I personally very much dislike Lucifer but I could not obtain consensus on anything I thought was better.

If you are not making suggestions as to improvements, then you are wasting your time. No amount of bawww is going to make the OTA names come back.

Your answer is here http://zero-k.info/Forum/Thread/24249, in case you missed the thread and the link in the news post. I'm going to resist giving you a shorter, personalized, answer. Read the thread if you really want to know. You can learn even more by following links to tickets and etherpad.

Reading the thread would also help you give useful feedback. Most of what you said is expected or rehashing old discussions. That you like "Desolater" is a small amount of useful feedback and there is a chance that something useful will come out you creating the thread.

I agree with FRrankLordOfTrolls.

Very funny renames. I laughed at full voice when I read new renames. :D
Very like renames like 'Merlin', 'Lucifer', 'Picket', 'cornea'. :D
This is 5 - 10 min work to create such renames. Don't understand why there was so large discussion about renaming if results is so poor.

"What a constructive intervention of yours.

You can have an opinion, I agree, but FWIW, your "opinion" was : "replace such cool unit names by those nonsenses" So you think past names were "cool" and now they are "nonsense". What kind of opinion is that? Tastes and colors, maybe for me the new names are "cool" and the last ones "nonsense" and we are 1-1.

"And what if I started playing years ago but made a new account?"

Did you start playing years ago or not? You are only saying "what if"...

"Do you realize now how useless is your comment?"

Your comment was also useless, because it reflected only your tastes with no argumentation (cool vs nonsense).

Considering the futuristic universe of ZK I think some of the following names would fit well:

Goliath = Overlord
I really can't think of a better name. It's scary and describes very well what is supposed to be THE most imposing tank on the field.

Banisher = Punisher
With his high-velocity missile it kind of "punishes" any unit or swarm of small units that come too close.

Ex-Annihilator = Supernova
This unit is punishing any unit with one single long range hyper-powerful laser blast. Supernova express that just perfectly (Google Image you will see that it looks just as in the game), we have the space/futuristic taste of ZK and players can easily refer to it as "Nova"

Ex-Behemoth = Tridora
It's easy to refer to during a game ("dora"), it's better than Cerberus, and it's a nice reference to the Schwerer Gustav 8000mm Canon.

I like Nova as a name, and I can see how it might feel good for Annihilator (because of the Gamma-ray burst), but also I can see how many people would associate Supernova with an explosion instead of a long-range ray.

Most people won't get the Tridora reference, but it's not hard to spell at least.

Punisher/Overlord are also not bad names, but I think you could put them to pretty much any unit and I wouldn't be surprised. (Currently I imagine them as https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Punisher and http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Overlord )

Some other name ideas:

turretantiheavy (formerly Annihilator): Rayet. Wolf-Rayet stars are extremely bright, hot, heavy, and quickly become supernovae. Many other turrets are named after scientists, so this fits a theme. The name includes "ray" as a substring.

turretantiheavy (formerly Annihilator): Spectrum. Another light/beam/ray related sciency term, but not a scientist itself. Available now that Spectre no longer is a name.

turretheavyaa (formerly Screamer): Mayday. Causes aircraft to crash a lot.

I've wanted Screamer -> Legolas (or Galadhrim) since seeing the Instant Legolas video.

MayDay to replace Screamer is definitely BADASS! It sounds scary, has an "air" reference and is easy to use during games.

It might be the best unit's name change proposition made so far IMO.

Mayday is a distress signal, so not sure it fits, except ironically

Why replace Screamer name? It wasn't an OTA unit.
