I started playing ZK after it was removed, apparently, but I was wondering why such an interesting unit idea was removed after I discovered it on the wiki. Balance issues? Bugs?

UI nightmare happened.

If you find gunship transports perhaps not entirely straightforward to use? Now imagine if they also were subject to Spring pathfinding and had to land their cargo on shores.

rather: Why cant I get regular ferrying to work?

move to start, shift area-load, shift area-unload to end, shift move to start
(repeat on)

doesn't this work?

Yes that works, but the dedicated ferrying tool does not

Surfboard was essentially useless for its cost and never used except as a joke, and there were a LOT of bugs associated with it (as well as its UI issues). Given that Djinn and air transports exist, removing it didn't seem to do the game much harm and made it more maintainable.

If I turned the surfboard into a hoverboard, would it be worth the maintenance/bug fixing/cost?

Le idea:

Hoverboard (Floating Weapons Platform):
- Has personal shield (1000 strength, 25 regen)
- HP: 2000
- Cost: 200
- All factories may build it.
- Units on the hoverboard may fire at other units.
- Speed: 2.2
- Units costing more than 1500m slow it by .1 for every 250m over 1500m down to a speed of 1.2 @ 4000m.

Utility provided compared to Hercules/Charon/Djinn/Lobster:
- Allows land units to fight on water unlike Djinn.
- Allows sea units to enter and fight on land without jankiness, unlike lobster.
- Allows units to fire from it, unlike Hercules/Charon.

I don't think I've ever built a surfboard.

Only reason I built surfboards was to load roaches and get rid of nasty amph players/sub spammers. I considered that pretty op. But now we have a unit that does the same without the added cost of the roach.

The idea of a hovering surfboard has been discussed before. For various reasons I don't precisely recall at this moment it didn't get traction.

I remember the counter argument was that even the much more versatile aerial transports are used very rarely. Once they are reliable and used, then we can add more transport-type stuff.

I may take that up as a project after the chickens patch cuz hoverboard with shield sounds like a lot of troll fun on mixed maps.

I heard about this on the wiki and assumed units can attack while they were on the Surfboard, which I think is cool.

I have seen one effective surfboard use. It was on Calamity map i think. One player make with them amphibious scallop assault on enemy base with from behind. But building ship fac for this unit is too costly and if in sea is porc then its useless. It can be used only as fast sneak attack and preconditions for such operations is very rare in ZK.

yea, amphs on surfboard would fire surface and torpedo weapons at the same time.

Detriment on surf board and detriment in Hercules both used to be faster than detriment walking.
