Select next Factory

Hi there

I am just a Zero-K beginner and trying to learn some basics:
Let's say I have two factories and I select the first with alt+q. Then I want to select the second factory with alt+w.
But that's not working, it's not selecting the second factory. Instead the first factory (which stays selected) starts
producing units related to "w" and is ignoring alt+w. Am I doing something wrong or do I really have to deselect factory 1 by mouse clicking somewhere?

Yes. You can mess with the UI options (or suggest some extra ones), but deselecting first is the default. Off the top of my head you could try any of:
  • Disable factory grid hotkeys.
  • Rebind the Select Factory keys to something that does not conflict with construction.
  • Rebind Select Factory to ctrl+Q, ctrl+W, ctrl+E... since ctrl disables grid hotkeys.
  • Find or suggest an option to make alt disable grid hotkeys.
These actions can mostly be taken somewhere in Menu/Hotkeys. Disabling grid hotkeys may require Menu/Settings/HUD Panels with Simple Settings unticked (bottom right of the menu).

I don't know how many people use the factory selection hotkeys. It was not bound by default for quite a while. When I bound it personally I set it to Alt+Q because my only use-case is:
  • Think: I need more constructors.
  • Mash Alt+Q a few times.
Adding a unit to a factory queue with alt held inserts the order to the front of the queue (without replacing the current construction) and makes it non-repeatable. This makes alt good for making a few one-off units in addition to a factories usual queue.

Later I added Alt+Q to the defaults, and added Alt+WERTY.. because they were there.

Thanks a lot for your fast reply! I'll give it a try. Btw. I'll never become a pro but I love ZERO-K, because it's exactly what I want in a RTS game. So thank's a lot for your effort, too!

welcome!

depending on which UI-setup you are using, right next to your "commande-UI" tile, there will show up factory-tiles for all operating factories. on click => select factory. i find this quite useful as you have an image of the fac-type, can then queue units and do not have to move the map to the factory.

have fun!

Hi there

I rebount Select Factory to Num1-6 which was working like a charm (including GUI) and as I intended. It doesn't conflict with other bindings. I saved the game and quit Zero-K. Later I startet Zero-K again, loaded the game and though the bindings were still set as before (Num1-6) the factories were not shown anymore via GUI and selection by pressing Num1-6 didn't select anything anymore.
Resetting the keybindings and restarting Zero-K didn't work either. Any ideas what I could do?

What do you mean the factories were not shown? Start a game, exit, then make a bug report through the Help menu. Link the report here.

Bug report created: https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/CrashReports/issues/22803

And here's a screenshot showing the problem: https://imgur.com/a/eBBqMkj

That bug report isn't long enough to contain the problem and it doesn't have a loading error in it. Make the issue occur and report a bug.

I did exactly what you toled me. I don't know why the report is too short nor why it should contain any loading bug.
I described the bug in my post above. I made the problem occur: Did you check my screenshot abvoe? The problem is pretty obvious there.

Thanks a lot!

im sure everyone cares and will work together to solve problems as best they can. help googlefrog to help you.

you should make sure your game is not corrupted in any way. have you restarted it and maybe dumped the temp files? once you are sure its a consistent bug related to your computers unique hardware / software environment frog can trace the issue.. but this issue is not occurring for other people on the normal setup i assume.

My theory is that something has crashed silently. The crash may show up in your logs. The crash does not show up in that log, but then again, it doesn't look like you had a factory or commander in that log. Sending a log after being in a game where the bug has a chance to occur would help.

Hi@all

Did you already try to reproduce the problem? Doesn't it occur on your systems?

1. Start a game
2. Change factories keybinds
3. save game
4. quit Zero-K
5. Restart Zero-K
6. Load game
7. Do the non-default keybinds still work?

If not, I will gladly provide all necessary information to solve it.

Thanks a lot for your patience and your support!

Read my first post. I am simply a beginner. So far I only played some matches against AI and tried to set up the game. No need to imply that I'm a troll. Instead you could be helpful, try to reproduce the behavior and tell me if it occurs for you, too. I still don't know if it's only on my machine. Thanks!

ok no problem.. these days the world is full of trolls and you can normally spot them by how willing to fight they are

Ok. The hotkey thing was a red herring and 'load' is often a synonym for 'launch' so I did not see it in your paragraph. The issue was with loading. Listed steps to reproduce are useful.
