I love drones. They should need their factory. Do we need to get any more units there or is it possible just to sufficiently shrink Bomber factory (from Planetwars and Campaign, i think)and pop in Viper, Firefly, Spicula and Gull?

Make reef into the drone factory gets my vote

Yes! even better idea! But drones should be useful for manually controlling but still slightly wobbly with limited control range?

Didn't EErankAdminAnarchid make a concept for a drone spider before Redback existed? I'm not sure if I remember that correctly, though.

It wasnt a drone, it was more of a mobile lotus iirc.

Funnelweb used to be a drone unit. I never saw it in that form, apparently it was reworked due to being too opressive when massed.

The conceptual problem I see with a drone fac is that drones as currently implemented are all light flying units that will be shut down by the same things. And they step into the toes of gunships.

I mean, drones should have a little health and be really cheap. Like 50 metal or so. But drones built by drone factory should be controllable at the cost of hp?

Funnel was useless when in 1s and 2s and stupidly OP when in 4-5. The unit just never really worked that well. Current Funnel is pretty amazing and a worthy replacement.

I second a call for a drone factory. It doesn't even have to be a factory, maybe even a "drone nest" which stands like a defensive post and manufactures drones to auto-attack an enemy within range. There's already something like it in the unit-levelling mod where stardust gets drones after a certain level. The drone nest could be upgradeable a few levels to make more and better drones.

The idea personally appeals to me because such a structure could engage raiders over a larger distance than normal porc, and also (depending on the distance the drones fly) act as a spotter for artillery to some extent.

Finally, it shouldn't be too hard a unit to implement - drones already exist, all you need is a model, I think.

Problem is: if drones are free, they will probably be too cheap a source of flying chaff. If they're not free, enemies can build a nearby razor and keep eating your metal, unless you turn it off.

All of this hinges on drones being uncontrollable and spawned continuously.

What if drones were stockpiled internally inside the drone unit, and released on attack (or dgun) command?

From what I understood some people complained that guardian commander with drones being nearby an enemy artemis or chainsaw just makes it completely useless against other planes, but shouldn't it be the point of drones? Make a new meta game by creating a new drone unit (which could be like a hard to control swarm of drones or so), which would render heavy enemy aa useless? Because right now, air is useful only until the enemy builds heavy aa defenses (or counter it with his own air), and then you have destroy his aa with ground forces or bomb it to death with singularity bomber. This would give you another option - just swarm it with cheap drones similarily like you swarm stinger with glaives.

You've invented Blastwing: an air unit that costs 55m, while a single Artemis missile costs 80m.

The problem with Blastwings is friendly fire. You can't swarm anything with them, because if one dies, all die.

Enemy can bait drones out with a cheap unit. If its only released on a d-gun, then its a defense turret that requires micro, which sounds bad. I think this would only work as an offensive building, similar to silo except you send a swarm of drones to the location.

Drones are only a problem for Chainsaw if the're free, Chainsaw has a pretty high fire rate. As for Artemis, it pretty much always needs to be set to manual. There are many ways to bait one, and even if you use planes that cost more than a missile, its probably gonna be worth it for the enemy after they bomb something juicy once the Artemis is out of ammo.

New missile for silo, DRONE BOMBER

Don't fly them in a packed group.

This applies to all kinds of units you want to not die as a bunch against Artemis. You do that with Ravens, and poof, they're all gone in one shot too.

This same logic would apply to anything that is stockpiled or has expensive shots. Yet Lance and Artemis exist in a world where Flea and Blastwing are present, and some people even consider it impossible to bait Artemis with Blastwing.

But both of those units are specialists that are expected to require micro, a small defense drone hub would not be. I suppose if it was a medium to large defense, it would be ok.

Why is it bad for a small defense drone hub to kill small units?
