That's why in my original waiting room suggestion, people could not join a running room except as spectators (and rejoin as players if they are already playing in that room) and it would be fine to make custom rooms but after a game in a non-password protected teams room, they would also be merged with the waiting room.

yeah i dont think people will keep playing this game if they are randomly merged out of their custom games lol

Any other opinions?

Right now there are 47 people in one room, 15 of them in the waiting list waiting for a game that is running for 45min. WTF.

And that does not count the 10 spectators. And 5 of the 32 players who were not in the waiting list were also actually waiting, adding up to 20 players who waited. And after waiting, some waiting players couldn't join the next game because it was full with 32 playing players...

For the moment, seed a room. Perhaps try to get people to click on a !proposebattle: https://zero-k.info/mediawiki/Setting_Up_a_Game#Propose_Battle

The goal of waiting list was to do an auto-split on start at about 40 players. That step hasn't happened yet. You could make that step happen.

Another point though, is your example that bad? How many players are going to cycle out after the game? Waiting another five minutes for that game to end, and having a full game, seems like a good strategy. The number of available players is the number of people who would play the next game, not the sum of the waiting list and the current players.

Alternately, maybe some sort of dynamic server wide size limit. If there are regularly 47 people waiting to play, then a room limit of 12v12 could be good. The big hurdle is how to scale to that point. At any game size you'll have some time of day where there are 20% more people who want to play than can fit in one room.

The real solution may be to somehow push through to the point that the waiting people go start another room. This might be aided by a long term room size reduction, if we seem to have grown to the point where, say, two 24 player rooms would see enough use to justify not having a 32 player one.

A lower room size would certainly annoy people. We would be trading off some people finding space to play at some hours against other people finding space when the 32 player room fills up. We would need some level of community buy-in or we'd be unable to untangle the effect (do people actually find more games?) from the chaos of complaints.

The best thing any individual player can do is become a sort of "shepherd". Seed new rooms, test out !proposebattle and spend the ink to convince spectators to use it. You now receive lobby chat ingame from any open room you are in, so you can watch and seed without missing someone joining. I don't think it would take many regular players doing this, caring about trying to make another room when appropriate, to actually do it. It's just waiting for a few people to step up. Stop wondering whether someone is going to make some magic tool that automatically fixes it, and see what can be done with the tools available.

This would only solve a very rare case and not the main problem.

I often use !notify and !proposebattle in the big teams room, join all matchmaker queues and then join a new teams room. My experience is that starting a new teams room works very rarely, the team matchmaker never works and !proposebattle never works. So you can also just not do it and either wait until the big game ends or play a different game than ZK.

I think that the reasons that !proposebattle doesn't work are:
1. People do not see it.
2. People do not understand it.
3. People want a bigger minsize.
4. The minsize is so big that not enough people join.
All those problems are solved by my suggestion to be asked to move to a new room with a customizable minimal size requirement from 14 months ago. Recently, I read a suggestion in #zkdev to at least solve problem 1.

And there are other very good ideas in this thread that should be discussed more like MM "rooms" and the waiting room.

I think the problem is really asking. These are rules that must be applied to the game and as in all games players must adapt to the rules.
By playing the MM, players expect to be split up and play balanced, more dynamic and fun games than a 16v16 game.
I think the fun of the game comes first. And as it is now, it's not funny.
I wonder if on other similar games they held a referendum to decide how to divide the rooms.

Then what do you think is the main problem? Because people waiting and the lack of a second room is what others seem to say is the problem.

It's hardly going to work if you !proposebattle a small number with no rating limit, then leave saying barely anything. You've got to sell it. Chat. Even if people did have the system explained, I'm not at all surprised that nobody clicks on "!proposebattle minsize=4" as the quality of that game will be highly uncertain.

ZK has one room because there are many people that choose to play in that room. Forcing something (like a limit of max players) would result in no large games played, but as there are so many games played already I see no reasonable reason to deny some players what they like because of some other part of the player base has a different preference.

Maybe you personally (or other people) would prefer a different game but nothing stops anybody to try to make such game or server and I am sure the players will consider it. It's not like the ZK server imposed himself in any way, the players can play on different servers or other RTS. There was even a cross advertisement with BAR and I heard on discord that (surprise!) some people changed and some people stayed, because everybody chooses what they like.
