Brave people, I call upon you, please help us create awesome steam achievements!

Can you draw nice "icons" for achievements in consistent style and relatively quickly?
Enlist now!

Some details how will steam achievements be implemented:
- ZK site will set user "stats" on steam. These will include counts for every award, ingame minutes and some info.
- steam can be configured to grant achievement upon reaching certain stats value. Either in absolute value or in "rate" - for example number of games per day. Or % of CA awards in latest games etc.
- ZK site will directly set other achievements which don't match stats

What are achievements for and what should they encourage?

Achievements should imo be rewards for exploring many of ZK possibilities and getting better at game. There could be achievement for completing campaign, for winning first FFA, for reaching CA award in big team game, for playing duck, killing easter egg chicken queen, hitting own transport mid air with big bertha by accident etc.. wacky ideas possible too imo :-)

How complex are these achievements allowed to be, code wise?
What about "cheese" or "alternative tactics"?

* Nap an enemy commander
* Complete a 2k+ metal unit in the first minute of a game
* Throw a Roach into an enemy base using a Newton
* Trap an enemy Raven using a Newton set to attract
* Terraform a 5k+ metal unit into a hole
* Capture an enemy Dominatrix that controls a unit
* Use nanoframes to block 5 enemy high-damage (500+?) projectiles in one game
* Win a game without building any mobile combat units
* Reclaim an enemy nanoframe

Could also be simpler but much more boring things like "learning" game basics.

* Hit an enemy very heavy with a Skuttle, Spy or Ultimatum
* Have an armored unit take 600% its HP in damage while armored (300% HP is from armor, the rest from repairs)
* Land a nuke inside a completed enemy antinuke's range (ie emp/disarm)
* Keep 10+ enemy units emped for 25 seconds using no more than two Ticks (16s each)
* Kill 10+ emped enemy units with a single raider (<100 metal)

Most of these could have "and win the game" as a requirement and should probably only be unlockable in matchmaking games to avoid cheating.

Another type of achievements could be community/event/social stuff or such.

* Participate in a tournament and win at least one game (not the whole Bo3 match)
* Have a Pull Request accepted on Github
* Give a builder or factory to an ally without either

There could also be silly stuff..

Reminder: Some achievement brainstorming has already been done, PLrankAdminSprung has collected the results here https://code.google.com/p/zero-k/wiki/SteamAchievements

Edit: Oh, there's a newer version on git: https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K/wiki/Steam-Achievements

Sprung achievements are great, I also like the names :-)

Now .. someone to paint those?

If someone really wants to do it, I'll gladly defer responsibility to them.

Otherwise, this looks like my kind of thing.

Use the existing archivements.
Inventing more seems like a timesink with little gain.
"Funny" awards like "Hit Commander in transport with Bertha" bring at best few seconds of mild amusement.

So maybe instead concentrate on more statistics-like stuff:
Tracking how many players sign up, how many manage to get ingame, how many manage to complete a game, how many of them customize commanders...
That sort of thing would help judge what is happening with playerbase.

I would stick with what we have now. As a rule of thumb anything which cannot be seen on a battle results page will require gadget work to transmit to the lobby. Achievements are also best when you receive them exactly when they occurred instead of at the end of the game. I am not sure how feasible it is to give achievements during a game and even if it is feasible it sounds like something with low payoff compared to awards based achievements.

It is generally possible, springie can get data from some gadget and act upon it instantly (submit achievement to steam).

It would have to be different because awards are every-game things and achievements are one-time thing.

A gadget/widget to do a swoosh sound and show the shiny new achievement instantly ingame (unless steam can be used instead of an "addon") is practically a must and i'm willing to do the swoosh part at the very least.

Note, the wiki page contains most of this argumentation.

Still need a volunteer to paint those!

Eeks! Please for all that is honky, don't limit achievments to dumb, boring grinding of awards or things like "Win 1, 5, 25 games on easy/normal/hard difficulty in a 1v1/2v2/...; Produce 10, 50, 250 units; Deal 1000, 5000, 25000 damage; Gather/Produce 1000, 5000, 25000 metal/energy; ...". These sort of achievments are the most basic and unoriginal of all. They fail to show how exciting and diverse gameplay can be and should not be what (new) players aim for.

well, the obvious thing is to tie each current award to an achievement for doing it 1x, 10x, 100x. Fancy stuff can come second.

Awards based achievemnts are no acheivements at all. Nobody really cares abaut collecting these (altrough imo they can be there just for reference sake to the after game acheivemnts, whatever). I like the ones that Sprung has listed but i would exclude the campaign ones for now ofcourse. Also dont iclude the trollish ones as they promote a bad behavior in games. Also the ladder ones could be tweaked a bit.

If i dont have to be rushed i could make the acheivemnts pictures at some point in life if nobody else wants to do it.

CArankPxtl, the "obvious" thing might be a bad choice. I'm fine with "get this award once or twice" achievements that make players try out new things, but not 10x, 100x, etc.

CArankPxtl, I don't understand your downvote. Care to elaborate?

Some ideas:

PS: Avoid merging with the ZK awards..

I've seen those and consider them hilariously fail (or evidential of hilarious fail):

Fat-fingered on my phone. You're a terrible person for having your up and down buttons so close to each other.
