That sounds like area mex. Select a con, hit ctrl+w, drag a circle and the con will build mexes on all metal spots in the circle.

In team games I set my 2nd con to mex everything on our side of the field to make up for slackers who don't know about F4

Also that doesn't sound like a very good friend.

GBrankaliuk2001uk i could make a widget for you that would do something like an advanced form of area mex.

pseudocode concept:
-get startbox locations, determine if horizontal or vertical split
-get all mex locations
-sort mexes by horizontal/vertical distance from your ally startbox (mexes within the startbox are sorted by distance from your commander)
-select a constructor and use a pre-set hot-key combo to trigger the widget to control the selected constructor
-the selected constructor will build mexes in the order previously determined above.
-if a mex is already built in a location, the order to build in that location is canceled

Sound good?

USrankAutoWar how about helping me fix the central-build AI widget instead. :P I've been thinking of adding some cool features as well, like automagically replacing buildings that die. Auto-mexing sounds cool, but I suspect it would just lead to constructors suiciding. :|

Guys, he was asking about areamex. I'm not convinced this is the time to talk to him about widgets.

Reminds me of when I first started and the only games I played were lan games against my friend on SpeedMetal at 3.0 speed. He wouldn't tell me anything because he wanted to keep winning but I started playing online games and learned how to play the game properly then he wouldn't even 1v1 me cuz he knew I'd kick his ass. Yeah, he was such a dick lol.

I played lan speedmetal games with a friend too; we usually agreed on 10 minutes no rush, and he once ragequit because i forgot to set a scouting wezel on hold fire and it killed 1 windgen, chainsploding a few dozen of them

good times

As for the widget maybe include something that changes the priorities of the mexes that are built first based on enemy locations.

This wouldn't work for your idea of rebuilding mexes, but if you find a rough "frontline" based on where the front mexes are then you can probably assume that it's safe to mex behind them. That would fix the problem of new players not mexing the backlines

The correct way to implement this would be to make the area mex command respond to Alt in a way consistent with the other commands. Other implementations would be too unintuitive/'bulky' to put in the UI.

ALT is very bad use... some are using window management behaviours with ALT.
either someone declares it or unexpected results. :) (mostly for Linuxers I guess)

Existing commands (eg. attack) use Alt for free draw already though.

I think I remember binding window movement to the [Super] (windows symbol) key instead for that reason last time I used linux

alt with other build commands makes a grid of things, and even then only if shift is also held. Swapping area mex from control+w to shift+alt might make good sense though, but breaks down on certain silly maps where you actually can queue up lines and grids of mexes.

I also used super on linux for window manager hotkeys, but that was because I used a mac before that where it was standard behavior. :P If anything though linux lets you customize that stuff while windows does not, and alt+tab is already a thing. I've never accidentally alt+tabbed in game though, so I don't see it as a major problem.

Those are not issues.

My Alt behaviour would be consistent with other area commands. It is irrelevant that Alt is used differently for drawable commands. Currently if you hold Alt while issuing Repair, Reclaim or Rez the command will not remove itself if there are no valid targets.

I said nothing about changing the command hotkey.

If Alt is broken for your computer then fix it. Otherwise you do not get the feature.

AUrankAdminGoogleFrog I did not know that. Does control do anything with repair/reclaim/res?
