GOG.com will be selling the Total Annihilation Commander Pack for only $2.99 this weekend. I've been playing TA in some form or another since '97 but lost my discs a few years ago. This is the perfect opportunity to pick up the game that started Spring and Zero-K.

GOG games are also DRM-free and they do some hacks to ensure reliability on modern systems.

Also, I'm not sure how multiplayer works nowadays, but I'd be willing to play some of you in a game of Classic TA if anyone is interested.

Awesome! Definitely going to check this out. I was wondering, in what ways is Total Annihilation different from Zero-K, gameplay wise?

Biggest difference is the economy. No communism, and instead of overdrive you have dedicated metal-makers (like a Mex, but powered entirely by energy and doesn't require placement on a metal spot). ZK punishes excessive economy by place diminishing returns on mex output with overdrive. TA rewards massive economies because the faster you can build fusions, the faster you can build metal makers, which means more fusions.... etc.... until you have +1000 metal income.

Static defenses are incredibly powerful in TA.

There are no Caretakers or Nano Turrets, so you have to build like 100 constructions planes set to patrol over your base to build stuff quickly.

Starts in TA are a bit more like SC where you start with little income and have to build your first factory, build construction units, etc.

It's generally a bit slower paced than ZK.

BA or XTA mods are closer to TA

Other thing is friendly units can shoot through each other in TA. This makes longer-ranged units much more powerful.

Not too sure about that. I nuked my own base one time when the missile hit an adv. air con...

Also had a number of casualties when my bertha destroyed a passing avenger or two. And that samsons have to go in formation or they're useless.

Short-range units shoot through each other. Not sure about long-range.

Heck, there's even some spring mods (XTA maybe?) that still allow you to shoot through allies.

I had a block of 20 big bertas at some point that shot through each other... it was silly

Went and bought TA.
Yes, shots ignore allied structures. Maybe not units, I had two annihilators blow up my own bulldogs. =(

Man, I was really bad at it back when I was still playing TA. Now that I come back to play it again, I just breeze through the missions.

Also, good ole' hawk spam! Eat a screenful of hawks!

I played through the campaign back in 2006 or 2007. I downloaded a balance pack before I started playing. I did the first couple missions OK but The Defense of Larab Harbor was freaking impossible. The balance pack made ships like 3x more powerful and they just pwnd me every time I tried. Frustrating as hell.

The harbor with the moho is hard in general. I think I ended up sending the commander to reclaim the final wave of warlords, heh
