Halloween is around the corner and so is the October 2v2 tournament.

The tournament is going to take place at 10 AM UTC on the 31st day of October. Registration is open up until 1 hour before the start time of the tournament.

Format and rules, as usual:
- 2 human players per team
- Double elimination
- Random seeding
- First map of each round is predetermined, the following maps in the winners bracket will be selected by the loser of the previous game from the featured 1v1 map pool.
- All winners bracket games will be best of 3 (including finals). All losers bracket games will be best of 1 with the exception of the losers finals (bo3).

It is possible to substitute for players who don't show up. If you have signed up, make sure to show up on time. Those who fail to show up will likely be subbed out by 10:30 UTC.

The players coming first, second and third will receive special unique collectible awards to their player profile as well as tournament points which will be used to determine the yearly champions of 1v1 and 2v2.

Link to bracket.

Maps will be announced soon.

Are trioxin missiles allowed in the tourney, given the date?

I'm open to suggestions at this point regarding that. I'd generally prefer a proper tournament without funny quirks, but if (potential) players want to see stuff like this as a one-off thing it can be considered.

Note that the maps page is currently bit bugged:
(On some browser) it does not load more maps if you scroll down and so it might appear as if many maps are not featured anymore.

For players who suffer from that bug and do not remember many mapnames, here are some suggested picks of featured 1v1 maps:

I think that tournament quirks could be a good idea, but they need to be well thought out.

A lot of gametypes are novelty only. They don't have much depth to them, and sometimes despite the implicit draw of a concept, it results in very dull gameplay.

For instance, zombies with small rez time sounds sort of fun. In reality, there's a cheese phase where you get something into your opponent base that they can't deal with, and if they manage to shut that down there's an uber porc phase with zero interaction, until someone manages to field a threat that can get to opposing base despite all the zombies intercepting them.

The first time you do it, you're trying to figure out how to best react to the changes in the environment, so the porc and cheese spam can be forgiven because there's novelty. But an entire tournament of that? Noooooope.

Zombies with higher rez times are of course more variable, I was just choosing an easy example to illustrate the pitfalls of adding spice to a tourney.

Given that the last tournament was just themed around odd, new, or unfeatured maps and that totally wrecked how seriously people took it and led to a really messy tournament, I wouldn't want any special game modes for the monthlies. As a special tournament, sure, that would be great, but the monthlies seem to work best when they are fairly standard.

I think that partly had to do with who chose to sign up last month and how the bracket worked out, rather than being entirely on the maps.

Did anybody get a news popup about this tournament? I didn't. Maybe that's why there's almost no signups?

OOOOH! IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't forget that daylight saving time/summertime ended last week for about half the ZK playerbase! As such chances are high that for most people reading this the tournament will be one hour of your local time earlier than usual.

The tournament will start in 16 hours and 30 minutes. When in doubt about whether this affects you, either check http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=31+october+10%3A00am+UTC or make sure to be one hour early just in case.

So, is this still happening this week, or what? It looks like there's only 2 teams, which is worrisome.

1 game isn't a tournament, especially when the winner is already decided
