-Dynasty generates 1VP due to Artifact on Gaia, we had a deal to keep Artifacts depowered-
Unacceptable act of agression detected. Powering on artifact in response.
25 hours ago CZrankpsaniac changed energy priority of Ancient Artefacts on Omega to Normal

And then I saw something:
25 hours ago EErankAdminAnarchid changed energy priority of Ancient Artefacts on Beowulf to High
That's it. Time to die, Dynasty scum!

25 hours ago CZrankpsaniac changed energy priority of Ancient Artefacts on Omega to High
25 hours ago CZrankpsaniac changed energy priority of Ancient Artefacts on Illiad to High

And I didn't even get to play a battle since then.

2 hours ago CONGRATULATIONS!! Federation has won the PlanetWars by getting enough victory points!

And that's how you singlehandedly win Planetwars. (With a bit of ally support, i guess)

The only reason this Planetwars lasted for more then 48 hours is because we had that initial deal. I liked that part.

Please find a way to remove that victory point system. It's not fun, not even for the winner. When we started generating VPs, the Empire was powerless to stop the arifacts. They maybe could have chosen who would be the winner, but that's about it. Also, arifacts are horribly overpowered. They are literally the most efficient way to spend your energy. They don't cost metal to spend that energy. A single dropship is 300 energy. What would you rather have- 2 dropships or 1% of the way to total victory? And you need metal to get those dropships and the artifact even takes less time to power on then a dropship factory.

Empire had the possibility, both Federation artifact planets were in direct attack range of Empire at that time.

For reasons which were much discussed in #zk earlier today, Empire did not feel compelled to pursue this option until it evaporated as gateway planets around the artifacts also fell.

The problem I've identified with the VP rules in the round that just happened was that enemy progress was impossible to reverse and very difficult to even halt. Even if you halted the VP gain at 99 it seemed like they could sneak in a VP somewhere and win.

To address the victory inevitability we've added VP decay, which is similar to IP decay on planets. If more than one faction has any VPs then every faction will lose 1 VP/turn, to a minimum of zero. This means that to win you'll need to consistently hold and power at least two artifact planets as one of them will just be fighting against decay. This means that to win you need to hold two artifacts for 100 turns. Factions with only one artifact have no VP progress and if you have no artifacts you go backwards. This will make the rounds longer and also allow for a way to reset enemy progress with a dedicated assault.

I have also doubled the energy drain and rush activation cost of artifacts to 1000 energy and metal respectively as well as increased their standard activation time,

Federation may still have won the round with these balance changes in place. The victory would have been later and harder-fought as 2000 energy to start VP generation is a lot of energy. The other factions would have more time to contest planet and more ship production backing them up. The VP system is intended to act as a comeback mechanism, as VP generation costs energy that could be spent on other things, and the produce a winner when one faction is clearly dominating the galaxy. Federation had the center 'king of the hill' area locked down as well as control of both their flanks. Something like this level of control feels like it should be a winning position.

hmhm CZrankpsaniac

You do know that we defended those artefacts during the whole evening right?

I have to say that my fellow Federation commanders did extremely well, but the "singlehandedly won planetwars" is not a completely ridiculous exagerration.

The timely artifact activation ensured an "easy" Federation victory.
What if they were activated 10 turns later? Or 15? (10 turns later Dynasty would have "only" 16 VPs)

Dynasty had 85 points at the end. They would have very likely won.

I think I contributed defending artifacts at last ~15 turns.

From Empire's perspective it boiled down to "in a three-way FFA, it is the second-strongest faction's responsibility to expend effort to stop the strongest faction from winning, and if they don't recognise that, that's their problem".

The third strongest faction is not inherently motivated to make the strongest faction not win, if doing so would merely make the currently second strongest faction win instead.
