My friend and I got clapped by Normal Bots. We're both shit and want to get better at the game. I've looked over the replay, but tbh I don't have enough experience with the game to know what to look for. Can anyone take a quick glance at the game and tell us why we're shit?

always have more energy income than metal income

diving in with locusts at around 9 minutes was bad, if you kept hitnrunning with those you'd had a game-ending advantage. locusts aren't very good at taking out bases

at around 15 minutes you just stopped being aggressive. bots had more mexes at that point, and they just widened their advantage from that point

more expansion in general

sitting behind aspises like you did at the bottom doesn't really work against bots. they'll just avoid the area or steamroll you with enough troops

don't cap out on your metal. always be producing something

Learning all the way up to beating the brutal bot is not trivial in ZK, the ai raids, avoids porc, ecos up, makes artillery and steamrolls. But the AI doesn't cheat so you can take the skills from paddling it on into multiplayer after.

The key to beating AI is to attack, not defend. Circuit is bad at defending itself.

The key to beating AI becoming good at the game is to attack, not defend. You can always find some specific build that the AI doesn't know how to attack, but the AI may be patched and any human is going to punish predictable strategies.

I'll most certainly attempt to put them to use in my next game. I think my friend and I will stick to AI for now though, we wouldn't want to ruin any poor man's game as of yet. Thank you for the replies, everybody!

Last note on the AI, is thats is build is reactive.

Eg. if it doesn't see you making combat units, it will focus on taking the map and eco up instead. you need to be aggressive to keep the AI honest.

if you make a lot of defences, it will make artillery.

if you make a lot of raiders, it will make riots; if you make air, it will make anti air and fighters. If you make heavy units, it will make heavy units of its own as well as try to produce counters like Skuttle, Ultimatum etc.

Bearing that in mind, you should try not to show the AI a quiet front for too long - or produce too much of a single particular unit for long.

COOP play through the single player campaign on Brutal difficulty is a good learning exercise!

watch some of Godde's 1v1 replays as well as other top players. Focus on how they set up the first 5 minutes of the game. It's all about aggression and eco.
