IIUC, the icon color should reflect max(casual rank, MM rank).

Now, there are cases when players are unranked in MM. It seems that then their icon color doesn't update despite the fact that they may have a high casual rating.

They have full rank bar on their homepage with the message "rank up on the next victory".

Example, USrankKole has passed 1900 casual rank in Sep 2019 and since then fluctuates between 1900 and 2000, as for now Ladder position: 142. Top 7.8%. But his icon is Red Dwarf color. Shouldn't he be Blue White?

My understanding is, color represents MM rank, and stripe/stars overall exp/ casual rank?
And Matchmaker was accurate so far putting me against similar skill players, last few games (on aurelian) were close calls, xd

Stripes/stars represent level, they have nothing (directly) to do with skill level. The colors handle that.

I could be wrong but I'm under the impression that colors represent casual rank. All players with high colors also have high casual ranks as far as I can tell, or are unranked. A lot of them are unranked on MM also.

Kole seems like a possibly bugged exception. I am gold so he should be also gold or higher. And I have played very few MM games and mostly lost so my rank shouldn't be coming from my competitive side.

Colours represent the highest skill bracket achieved, where brackets are proportional. This means that it's easiest to gain colours by getting a high position in the most populous mode.

Right now, there are 1850 rated casual players and 315 rated matchmaking players, so to get silverblue (top 10%) or higher means you would need to be in either top 185 casual, or top 31 matchmaking.
