Ferry & Formation ?s

I've not been able to find much help via the search command for 'ferry.' I've never come close to needing transports, so I have not tested it.

I imagine it's something that works only with Djinn, Air Transport & Surfboard?

Here's what I secrety hope Zero-K has and I don't know about it: a way to build a prescribed group across 1+ factories -- eg: 2 Raiders, 1 Puppy, 1 Sumo -- and then tell that group to walk (in formation?) to a spot and fight along the way.

Rather than throwing individual bots into the fray, throw groups of them without microing.

As far as formations go, is the Zero-K way to force units of differing speeds to walk together the 'wait' command?

Thanks

Ferry works for air transports. There might be a wiki page. Otherwise just assign transports and units to it by moving them into the circle.

You might be able to use these wait commands to do the factory things which you want to do. http://springrts.com/wiki/Using_Orders#GatherWait I think the only way to give them is with lua.

If you give units an order with ctrl pressed (or maybe alt, I forget) they will move in formation and at the same speed.

Also you can use embark disembark .. select units, queue embark, move, disembark.

Air transports will then carry selected units between embark and disembark.

The very page you linked says that you can bind them like any other command, ie.
/bind shift+k timewait 60 queued

Hold ctrl when using the move or fight(?) commands to have the selected units move at the speed of the slowest one

Don't be an ass, Skasi.

Two of his three questions aren't answered anywhere in the Manual pages. And I'm not sure that his transport question is answered there, either.

purei:

Re ferry: Check out the Transport AI manual page. Other than that there's not a lot of documentation, but if you play around with it in a test game you'll probably figure it out.

Re building a group from factories: the GatherWait command that GoogleFrog pointed you to could conceivably do that, but I'm skeptical that anyone can get it to work smoothly and efficiently. You're probably better off assembling your groups manually at a rally point and then sending them off in formation whenever you have a group that's composed as you like it.

Re moving in formation: if you hold down ctrl while issuing a move or fight order, then the selected units will move in formation to the destination. The entire group will move at the speed of the slowest unit, and they will maintain their positions relative to each other. They'll move such that the centerpoint of the group travels to the ordered destination point.

Skasi:
I have heard of the manual; I've been lurking in the forums for a month now and I've read much of the manual both on the springrts site and zero-k's. I've used both google and the search bar at the top of this webpage. I know how hard it is to realize how other people don't understand a game you're well-versed in, as well as how hard it is to not be rude and snarky as a result.

CrazyEddie:
I found the Transport page, but the word 'ferry' isn't anywhere on there. 'Ferry' is a generic command like 'retreat area' is so I've wondered what it might do.

GoogleFrog / sprung:
Thanks for the formation info, I had seen a springrts YouTube video that showed formations working so I figured it had to exist

I checked out these things which I thought would mentioned ctrl-click, but they don't seem to:
http://zero-k.info/wiki/AdvGuide#Custom_formations
http://springrts.com/wiki/Using_Orders

The 'GatherWait' thing was what I meant when I mentioned the 'wait' command, but I a) didn't realize it was something very different and b) have not yet played with bind. I'll do that soon. Thanks for all the responses.

"Custom formations" and "move in formation" are two different things, and they probably don't play well together. Custom formations is click-and-drag while issuing a movement order; move in formation is control-click while issuing a movement order. I'm honestly not sure what happens if you try to control-click while clicking-and-dragging.

Click-and-drag gives each unit in the selection a different destination, spaced out evenly along the line or curve that you draw. Each unit then moves towards its assigned destination at its own pace. You can't control which unit goes to which location, and you can't control what order they arrive in. It's probably most useful for a homogeneous group of units.

Control-click gives each unit in the selection a different destination, but each destination is based on their current relative position, so that they formation they end up in is the same as the formation they start in. They also move at the same speed, so they all arrive at the destination at the same time and stay in formation throughout the entire move.

So you might want to, for example, use click-drag to send a group of assault units into a line, then again to put a group of skirmishers in a line behind them, then again for a line of artillery behind that. And then use control-click to move the entire squad into battle while staying in their three assigned ranks.

>I checked out these things which I thought would mentioned ctrl-click, but they don't seem to

It actually is mentioned on the Using Orders page: "Holding down on ctrl while giving a move order issues a "Move in formation" command. In this case, formation means whatever formation or configuration the units were in when they were given the order." But it's easy to miss. There's a lot of stuff on that page.

Ah it is there, thanks, I see it.

I do understand custom formations -- that line drawing is insanely useful. It's been a while since I played an RTS, c&c or supreme commander are probably the last ones... some of the innovations (new to me) in zero-k/springrts are fantastic.

I just got out of a game where I did line people up, then move them like you say with ctrl-click to keep certain units in the back. Thanks again.

Don't be an ass, Eddie. I don't have to help him with all his questions, it's perfectly fine and nice if just one of them can be answered by the manual.. When I link him to it - that's where you can find the transportation guide - you complain, then you do it yourself. You're this awesome: |ll-------|

purei, I'm not rude nor snarky. I tried to present you a hint in a more interesting way than just pasting a link. If you already took a look at the manual that's fine, I couldn't have known that; Hence the question mark.

Skasi, your comment seemed to me to be very condescending. My apologies for assuming that you intended it to be condescending.

Last time I tried the same speed and custom formations worked together. But I did have an issue with units never resuming to their regular speed after using same speed movement. Does anyone know if this has been fixed?

CZrankAdminLicho, I'm pretty sure the disembark command doesn't work for air transporting at all. Last I used it, air transported units were locked and prevented from receiving the disembark order. Only the embark command works, which is fine, since they automatically disembark anyways if you can queue an embark/move command before the unit is actually lifted.

Obviously, this may have changed, but that's the behavior that happened last I played with embark/disembark.

Needs to be reported then.

Also, I'm pretty certain area unload is broken - e.g. you can not load a bunch of sumos and then QUICKLY drop them where you need em, you have to give unload order to each transport separately.
