So after seeing the same loadscreens countless times over and over again, I've noticed a few shortcomings with the current batch we have, namely:
(1) The ZK logo is covered by the loading progress, it looks unprofessional. The text used to be in the center in an older Spring version, now it's all listed on the left.
(2) Advice font is sometimes hard to read if over a bright area like an explosion
(3) Some screenshots are old, use older versions of graphics and models
(4) There's only 5 of them. They are a great way to give new players advice and/or repeat important pointers, so more would be useful.

Solutions:

{1}Move logo to right of screen
(2)Add ZK themed window for text (Darkhive, like site, lobby, and ingame)
(3)Use newer better screenshots
(4)Grab new pointers from wiki and google code page, use those to make new loadscreens.

If mine is good enough to get added in, I can touch up the existing loadscreens to fit the style and make some new ones.

EDIT: Pic update

Nice load screen!
By the way, I remember long ago there was a screen in ca/zk that said something like
"windgens in higher positions make more e because they are closer to the wind god, me"
We need moar funny screens, although they would look a bit unprofessional as theyak said xD

Darkhive is meant to be the default interface skin? I was using Robocracy (still prefer it over the default Carbon).

As for the solution, well done. The screenshot looks beautiful and the layout of everything is nice and easy to read. Out of curiostiy, did you apply the DoF in post or use the widget that was bouncing around a while ago to have it on in the shot? Did you want people to supply screenshots for these?

Is it possible to drop this into my ZK install right now?

Do you have all the ideas laid out for the text on the screens? Speaking as a new player, the most useful bits of information that come to mind to teach others are:

-The general strengths and weaknesses of each factory type (using several screens). Mentioning facplop in these would also be helpful, as it isn't obvious at first to build factories as the first or nearly first structure.

-That Metal, Energy, and Buildpower are used in a 1:1:1 ratio, and that adding buildpower is only useful when the other resources are in abundance.

-That fire, gauss, and lightning penetrate shields

I think carbon is default still, but darkhive matches the site interface so I've always kind of considered it the "main" one, I don't know how correct that is.

For post processing, all I did was adjust the color and add some gaussian blur by hand. See original here: http://licho.eu/gallery/view_photo.php?full=1&set_albumName=Zero-K&id=assembled

I don't have a lot planned out, there's a couple new ones I want to do and retouch the old ones, I've been working off of the relevant page on the developer site here: http://code.google.com/p/zero-k/wiki/DidYouKnow
If anyone has any nice screenshots to share they should definitely do so, even if they don't make good loadscreens ZK could use more screenshots.

As for installing it now, no, it will have to be committed to the ZK build repo. I can make a patch once I have a few of them.

Carbon is still the default skin, I'm not sure if that is intended to be changed.

I'll see about screenshot-able moments and take as many as I can. I'll just have to remember to turn off Xray and Outline first (I find they help visibility in general). When I get more free time I might check out that DoF widget I saw from before, but I'm not sure how well supported or updated it is, but if you are okay with doing the post-processing by hand it's probably not a big deal.

I have had this same idea for a long, long time. The current load screens are more of a joke than anything remotely final.

Congratulations, your graphics editing skills greatly surpass those of mine, and you even chose a picture that is as much false advertising as possible - just like the big titles do it! ;)

Sure, make a bunch of loadscreens and we'll put them ingame. All we need is someone to do the work.

We have a collection of prospective loading screen text here:
http://code.google.com/p/zero-k/wiki/DidYouKnow

It's a bit hard to read the text you've used against that background though. Just seems kind of noisy.

Awesome!
Perhaps the box with message and logo can be separated (in case we want to swap them around).

Awesome job! Please make more; the current load screens can be completely replaced.

Although it might be good to check in with jK to find out the status of lua loadscreens, and what extra capability they will offer. That way you can design the loadscreens with that in mind ahead of time.

This is great! Im getting so tired of current load screens (although with my new computer I dont spend as much time at them. hehe). Still this is a great idea and will help make zk a better game.

Saktoth: Okay, I can make the back a bit darker/blurrier if the text is too hard to read now.

Licho: I can share the source files for the whole thing, though when it gets put in the loadpictures folder it will just have to be one jpg/png.

luckywaldo7: I haven't heard of this before, thanks. Is there any documentation released on this or is jk the only source of info?

So, question: I think that the fanart piece on this page ( http://zero-k.info/Wiki/Fanart ) is fucking awesome and I would like to put it in a loadscreen. Does anyone know this guy's username or contact info so I can ask his permission first?

knorke is active here, so you'll be able to talk to him by just being in zk-lobby or pming him in the forum (that's possible here, is it?).

'Tales of Interest' is by Knorke. The fanart is by Jeremy Gooch and we have full permission to use it for the game already. I don't know if it won't stand out next to all the game screenshots a bit much but we may as well use it I suppose.

I've taken a few dozen shots of scenes from various replays. Currently uploading them to imgur:

Very nice, this is one of things which new player sees.

BUT we need also hide spring output (who the hell cares about how much resources was loaded??). It should be easy to change it to progress-bar for some1 who have access to spring source (1 line of output -> 1 piece of progress-bar).

The messages on the load screen never bothered me that much. It even looks kinda cool to have all those fancy lines with terms most players don't understand. ;-)

But those debug messages in the game chat are annoying.
