Units set to automatically fire at shields do not shoot at enemy shields in range.

It is only for small shields. For some technical reasons.

I tested this with Ronin on one side and Aspis, Felon, Thug as the shield target.

Static positions with only enemy shield in range:

Felon: Ronin fires at shield (bad targetting at ground)
Aspis: Ronin doesn't shoot
Thug: Ronin fires at shield (bad targetting at ground)

Automatic attack move:

Felon: Ronin ignores shield as target and runs to death into Felon
Aspis: Ronin ignores shield as target and runs until Aspis is in range
Thug: Ronin ignores shield as target and runs until Thug is in range

So there are multiple issues here:

1. Ronin shoots at ground, but should shoot at source of shield
2. Automatic firing at big shields doesn't work
3. Auto attack move ignores firing at shields

The issue with firing at the ground instead of at the source of the shield is not unique to Ronin.

Here is a picture of a Fencer missing its shots because of it.

It's not a rocket issue either. Here is a mace failing to fire at shields correctly.

Is it possible that this is making a significant but hard-to-see contribution to shields feeling OP to some players? Admittedly, there are clearly other factors too (skill being one of them) BUT:

ISTR a wise person once said "range is the most OP stat in the game". If that's even partly true, then the ability to fire at shields "correctly" (i.e. without other unintended disadvantages like friendly fire) is a very significant advantage to any units fighting a shieldball because it essentially increases their attack range. So the inability to do so represents a significant "buff" to shields / nerf to most direct-fire counter-shield options.

And here madez clearly shows some failure cases... which are clearly important, but it also has me wondering if my auto-attacking ronin where getting demolished by a few thugs because they just weren't firing at the correct range or because I just didn't micro them like an actually good player would.
