How do I find small team games?

Hey, new player here and I'm loving the game. I spent a while working through the campaign (very good) and recently started playing multiplayer. I've played some 1v1 and a couple TAW games and I really want to play small team games like 2v2 or 3v3, but there's never enough people in matchmaking and those that are just join the first 1v1. I also haven't seen any active small team games in custom games except a couple high rank ones.

Is there a peak time to find these games? Is there party matchmaking people do? Do I just need to get high enough rank to join the high rank games?

hi and welcome! sadly the community is quite small. you are likely to find more games during the evening hours of european times.

Play 1v1. This will introduce you to people around your level. There is a high overlap in skill between 1v1 and small teams. Become pals with these people, and get some sense of when they're on. Once you're acquainted, you can organise small teams.

That's what I did anyway. The MM doesn't really work for team games in my experience.

Welcome USrankEntropyEnjoyer, welcome to Zero-K and the club. I also enjoy small team matches more than the big Teams All Welcome (TAW) lobby. The community has unfortunately not yet substantially grown to support more than one teams lobby regularly. I, for one, think that "measures" are necessary, but some are saying more marketing is necessary to grow past this point, and they are probably right. It would help Zero-K a lot if a streamer would play it.

I agree that you should play ranked 1v1, because it's easier to find matches and it gives you a good training for what is good in small team matches. I believe with some practice and the desire to do it, it's achievable to join Palladium. It sucks that the small team games is gated by rating, but it's necessary to have reasonable balancing.

During some hours the TAW lobby is small and you can get some small teams matches there, but don't expect the players to play good, as TAW reinforces bad play.

Best times are on the weekends during peak player count. Ask people to either 1v1 or do small teams in the global chat. If people spectate your 1v1 ask them to join for small teams. They can join your lobby or join an empty Teams All Welcome lobby. Sometimes just creating your own lobby with an inviting title works, there are other players who like small teams.

There is usually a TAW wind down - as Europe goes to sleep there's less than 10 players in TAW, so it naturally becomes small teams as people exit.
