Based on my first experience with ZK tournaments I'm posting some things I'd like to see in future tournaments.

* Lock commanders to Commander Junior
* !setoptions overdrivingscheme=communism;allyreclaim=1 and any other modoptions that help with teamplay, alternatively add a proper commshare mode
* Bring back team-spectator mode and allow one, two or even more slots
* Increase the stream delay
* Have it be a two-day tournament so players don't have to play 3+ hours in a row after midnight, that could also mean enough time for Double Elimination
* Nerf OP Storage

I'd like to expand this list to make tournaments as nice for participants as possible, everyone is welcome to add to it.

edit: To clarify, this does not mean all tournaments absolutely have to change. I'd just like to give these things a try, especially things like !setoptions or team-specs that don't really "harm" anybody.

Why? What is wrong with custom coms?

...everything?

Too much randomness.
Too much focus on a single unit.
Commander too big of an influence on smaller maps.
No good in-game interface to see morph options.
Kills early Energy eco-planning game.
Auto repair on big HP unit early in the game is too strong.
etc.

I have reason to believe it was. Not gonna be more accurate 'cause I'm afraid of admins swinging their banhammerdildo.

Floris pretty much summed it up. If people miss them, there's always WC3 and the AoS genre.

To give my own answer: Commanders were designed to "Not be an ideal solution" and to "not to outperform other units", but there's not a single strider with buildpower, there's not a single jumping amphib strider, there's not a single non-comm with concussion shot, there's not a single strider with autorepair, there's not a single non-comm that can fight while morphing and if you watched yesterday's tournament you could see people hardly ever can be arsed to build, let alone win with strider hubs. I've mentioned "strider" quite a few times here, but most of the time could've just as well skipped it, this applies to other units as well.

Yeah, our game on titan duel was pretty much decided when i left Drone's com with under 100 HP and couldnt finish it. Lost my entire air force there, got nothing in return because com just went back and regenned.

I have always been in favor (idiotic noob arguments FTW!) of making coms simpler and less important. I don't see why they have to go past lv2 to be honest. They can be a useful alternative to excessing but it is better to learn eco management and other than that they are a noob trap. Would a modoption to make coms less important be useful?

There's no point to have a unique unit for starting if the game isn't assassination centered like TA or SupCom, a standard unit would make more sense.

Firstly I think we could have a different time. There were 6 Australian players and 8 European players yet we played at a time which only worked well for America. The tourney started at 6am over here and went late into the night in Europe. Some time near 0900 UTC would work well for Europe and Australia. American continent people would just have to stay up late (an earlier start would help this).

I liked the Support Ecell meta. The commander did basically nothing else. I told them that buffing Recon by 1.3 metal and 5.3 energy would make them dominate but nobody listened.

The power of Jump for survivability and mobility is significantly underrated. Hitting health might bring this in line but then they would become even more extreme which would not be a good thing. Jump has too much of an impact on commanders to workaround it like this.

Then there are the manual fire weapons and conversions. Those are basically abalanced (no balance has been attempted as far as I can tell). I think it is fairly obvious that a long ranged accurate weapon is going to be good. At various stages people have tried to add weapon modules such as Penetrator Beam or Capture Ray. These would be completely broken because such weapons are only balanced by being on really weak chassis. Jump with long ranged weapons sounds basically OP, there is a reason Moderator cannot jump.

These commanders are probably partially counterable by Spy but that still makes the game revolve around them.

At least this is a simple question. The answer is no, nobody uses modoptions.

Yog, GF was probably referring to old Moderator. Anyway, I know that commanders are always an exciting topic, but please don't limit this discussion to only my first wish.

First of thanks for organizing, did not play but replays&casts provided some entertaimnent.

Maps:
except for Desert Needles: very "conservative" map pool. The player-picked maps too.
How about:
Aum http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/31740
Valley of Unrest http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/17508
Red Triangle Remake http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/9383
Hard Charge http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/7490
Pathway http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/19668
Lava Highgrounds http://zero-k.info/Maps/Detail/7553
imo nothing wrong with using FFA maps, they can be evenly split for 2 teams too.

I watched some of the recorded casts and a few replays: It looked like zero-K:Commwars edition.
It seemed very focused on killing the enemy Commander. Either with your own Com or with bombers or with spam units. (for ex flash/panther)
Not so much focus on mapcontrol or raiding bases.
To me start of game is most interessting when it is about scouting/raiding and expanding, instead it was make-random-heavy-thing for compushing/killing.
A few such matches are ok, but when too many games start with such "cheese" is not so interessting anymore.
When there is Commander running around at front, providing all the energy of a player plus metal from reclaim, plus fighting enemy army, plus making turrets, plus enemy tries to snipe him: too com-centric.
I think just because something is "balanced by metal cost" that does not mean it is good for gameplay.

From player side I am personally not interessted in "learning" Commander modules: what chasis can have which upgrades, how they stack, how to counter them and all that. Imo disattracts from the RTS and is just gimmicky.

Replays:
archive played games by posting links in tourney thread.
Commenting on them brings them to the top now, but in few days they will be lost.
Maybe have loser post the replay links, like in some older tourneys.

Why do people here feel that the comm-centrism issue is only relevant to 2v2 tourneys and not ZK in general?

I told you before, a long stream delay messes up chat feedback, making it impossible to really communicate with people in Twitch chat. Also, as far as cheating goes, people can cheat via mumble or Skype with a patsy spectator, and any stream delay shorter than "watching the replay" is never going to be long enough (and just watching the replay takes out a lot of the steam of the stream).

I'm with GoogleFrog on changing the time to 0900 UTC. I realize I'd be up at 2AM, but it's on a Saturday so at least I can have a nap and have an evening afterwards. Commentating tends to keep me pumped anyway. 2 day long tournament would probably wear on people, especially since the second day is right before a work day. Double-elimination takes longer than you think.

I fully support the motion to abolish commanders (or lock morphs above lvl2).

It's surely better than jump meta. Both are boring, but support had less impact.

USrankFealthas, communism means all income from overdrive is shared equally. Right now people who build eco get slightly more until price of eco buildings is paid back. allyreclaim=1 means you can reclaim allied structures and units.

USrankAdminCarRepairer, regular games are not really competitive, especially in 10v10. Plus in 10v10s you normally have access to (almost) all units right from the start, that combined with the fact that the enemy has 10 commanders makes specializing in comm-killing much more efficient.

CArankAdminShadowfury333, a two day tournament could be friday-saturday, or try to use holidays. It doesn't have to be all tournaments, so if we ever happen to hit a date where many players/countries/timezones can be available, that would be a good oppertunity.

Team-spectator mode means a player is part of a team, but does not control any units. They can point out important things to assist their team or teach new players. It's just like a helpful widget, but with a brain. Back then they could also replace people who dropped out of the game. That's probably not needed in a tournament, but still nice. I think this would improve the quality of a battle without making casting harder like a 3v3+.

I sure hope we don't have to choose between one or the other. There is easily enough potential for nearly all of the chassis (not quite sure about bombard) to be viable alternatives to each other with minor tweaks.

Skasi
I'm quite sceptical about the viability of a two day tournament.

Firstly, not everybody has two days of the weekend free so participation would take a hit.

Secondly, it would be messy. It took quite a while to get some of the first round games going last saturday due to some people not showing up, others being late, some being in other games while the tournament officially started, etc. With a two day tournament you get that twice. It's actually significantly worse, because chances are there will be someone who plays on the first day but doesn't show up on the second day. Substitute could be found, but some of the games have already played. Whose names shall then stand in the bracket? Who will get the prize kudos if such a team wins? It would just unnecessarily messy imo.

Yah, hence the "both boring".

Impart suggestions? Also ftfy.
