Make Surfboard buildable by cons?

This might give it some utility on maps where you don't want to fully switch to a water factory but it would be nice to cross a bit of water. Getting around the outside of maps like Isle of Grief, crossing the lakes on the sides of Tabula, etc.

I imagine it would still be a niche unit but at the moment it's pretty much a joke, occasionally used for trollcoms on sea maps and that's about it.

I don't think I've ever seen a surfboard. Literally ever, never ever.

I agree, but wonder why it is that Valkyrie is still built (including the factory switch that's required). Maybe Surfboard should be a lot cheaper or redesigned?
Is Valkyrie's ability to fly over enemies and thus freely go directly to the enemy base what makes it worth it? Maybe Surfboard should be a hovercraft/amphibious vehicle so it has the same base penetration? Or should it be used for different reasons?

need surfboard buff though. it is too expensive
athena could built it

Surfboard needs redesign (or fix), because now it can't load units automatically (every transport in every RTS does that) and when you try to send Pyro on it, he may burn the Surfboard under himself just because of fire hitting the edge of the surfboard. ALso, it is quite costly type of transportation ...

With respect to the Valkyrie comparison:

- Valkyrie is much faster compared with both the Surfboard and the units it transports
- The kinds of terrain you want Valkyries to transport over is far more common than the situations you want a Surfboard for
- Valkyrie can be built anywhere and get to where you need it, Surfboard has to be built in the body of water you need it
- Valkyrie is much more aggressively costed (80m vs. 220m)

Surfboard may need buffs and fixes in addition to this to be viable. In fact, it probably does.

However, if you have to make a Ship factory to make Surfboards, and there is enough water that this seems worthwhile, I have never seen a situation in which making Surfboards (even if they were buffed) was preferable to just making combat ships.

Moving ground units around, on the other hand, is frequently preferable to making gunships - or at least useful in combination.

I don't think limiting it to Athena is necessary - Athena is already pretty niche in its own right.

This might have the (partially) unintentional side effect of allowing landfac cons to take sea mexes. I don't see this as a huge problem.

This would increase mixedness. I strong like this proposal.

I think surfboard should really grow bigger in size, like to the size of airpad and be able to transport small to medium land army. New Transporting API should allow this. I can imagine thuglaw ball moving on such platform. Other option will be to get rid of it completely, which I don't think 99% of players will even notice.

Ooh, reblogged.

Maybe give it to athena?

Claymore is a joke compared to that.

If it weren't for the insane micro requirements you might see surfboards being used more commonly.

Claymore is cheaper and sometimes reusable.

But claymore doesn't blow up the whole sub/scallop stack in one shot. Of course all of this only works if the enemy doesn't know line move (which seems to be the case for 50% of players in all welcome..)

Remove surfboard from unit and give unit storage space to Warlord, with very long unlaod range. When u unload far away untis are moved by drone-like surfboards. Perfect D-Day [/neon]

The question I'd like to see answered is What game mechanic is the surfboard supposed to provide that is not already covered by the valkyrie?

Perhaps being able to move an active eraser?

Perhaps make it cloakable (together with its passenger), we don't have any cloakable sea unit yet, some certain combinations of a cloaked surfboard + passenger could be very useful in sea.

PLrankFailer actually a few weeks/months ago there was some talk by devs to add unit transportation to Reef by turning its drones into flying loaders.

Yay, now make landed planes be recognized as ground unit by aa (so enemy aa doesnt fire at landed planes), make Reefs pads landable even if plane is fully repaired and lanuch a full scale invasion on this red commie land!
