Holding territory

Hi, for a beginner like me, what are effective ways to spread my territory and hold it?

I did most of my SupCom competitive play in vanilla rather than FAF, so camping in your base and teching up was much more viable back then. FAF and Zero-K emphasize map control much more, and I never had a good grasp.

My instinct from single player TA days is "build some (flying) constructors and queue every mex point", but the AI raids so effectively in Zero-K that the constructors and mexes don't survive for long. I'm sure human opponents would be the same.

I've seen suggestions that you build a Lotus + Picket to deter single raiders, do people do this in ever expanding areas, or do people expand in a "expansion" style where they find a cluster of mexes and build a another fortified base?

A lotus per cluster of expansions, decent radar coverage, and reaction forces to intercept enemy raids.

Pure static defense is not going to work because the enemy can concentrate all his mobiles on one point and take low-density defenses with minimal attrition. High-density defenses means sacrificing your expansion rate - instead of losing territory to Enemy, you lose it to Time.

If you're attentive and quick with the mouse, often you can completely rely on radars and mobile forces, but in practice a hybrid approach is usually best.

Thanks. As I build mexes and units, do I then start to park groups of units around my territory so I can hunt down small groups of raiders? Because usually my instinct is to just throw everything at the enemy and try to take out some mexes...

That is indeed the question! Find what works best for you; this balance between offense and defense tends to be a fluid thing.
